Good searching Muaddib.

With all the agreements, communiques and declarations in the area, it can be a bit difficult to find what you want.

In regard to your First Asian Independent Republic comment, that is an odd situation. My understanding is that it was declared as the Chinese were heading out the back door, after they had signed the Shimonoseki Treaty. I'm not 100% sure on this though, as I've seen many conflicting accounts.

Not the nicest conditions to give someone independant status under.

""chink"? I find that offensive and so would any other chinese person. Nice to know what you regard us as."

Channy, I am sure that the person who posted that was not aware that he had inadvertently made a pun. In any event, I don't believe that looking through a person's posts tosee if there are any slurs, perceived or otherwise.

Perhaps you just need to change your orientation on this.

I doubt he meant that as an offense towards Chinese people. He was clearly alluding to "it is the weak spot in their armor."

The "chink" seems to be an innocent misunderstanding of the word that is used in the term: kink in the armour.

I know of no British treaty involving Taiwan, but there are these:

The Treaty of Shimonoseki (1895)
China cedes to Japan in perpetuity and full sovereignty the following territories together with all fortifications, arsenals and public property thereon: -
(b) The island of Formosa (Taiwan), together with all islands appertaining or belonging to the said island of Formosa.
(c) The Pescadores Group...'

TREATY OF PEACE The Republic of China and Japan,
It is recognised that under Article 2 of the Treaty of Peace which Japan signed at the city of San Francisco on 8 September 1951 (hereinafter referred to as the San Francisco Treaty), Japan has renounced all right, title, and claim to Taiwan (Formosa) and Penghu (the Pescadores) as well as the Spratley Islands and the Paracel Islands.

Ah sorry no offence was intended as it is a commonly used expression: SOme common examples of the use of the term:

Two critical Explorer holes chink SP2's armour
Link1

New chink in TB's armour
Link 2

However since some are offended by it I will edit it out of the topic

Thanks maudib - and somewhereinbetween too, great links.

Sorry if I wasted everyone's time. Looks like I must have been thinking Hong Kong, not Taiwan (Formosa).

Interestingly the Chinese are not above insults as I would of believed.

1) White People = Gweilo (White Ghost)
2) Japanese = Lo Pak Chai or Mui
3) Philipina = Pan Mui or Pan Chai
4) Mainland Chinese = Ah Chan
5) Singaporeans = Po Chai or Po Mui
6) Indians/Pakistanis = Ah Cha
7) African or African/American = Haak Gwei (Black Ghost, sort of)

Can we stop saying that China gave Japan Taiwan!!

It wasn't given, it was forced.

Jeez, just because it wasn't conqured, doesn't mean it was given...
