Politicians are crooked because they are incentived to be, they are given/offered bribes/kickbacks/donations to either create or at creatively change laws to provide loopholes for corporations to make more money, often involving the destruction of competitors, affectively shutting down free markets and creating monopolies.

Power doesn’t corrupt, Power reveals... and corrupt people tend to do better than those with high morality in a system solely focused on profit..

Before someone has power they have to pretend.. once they are the powerful one, they no longer have to pretend... well or pretend less.

There is an easy way to end political corruption..

Don’t let them make ANY money other than their salary.. and obviously pay that salary for life.

They can accept no gift over 1,000$ or something reasonable for Christmas and such..

Sure some will still try and beat the system, but good luck when no transaction in your favor is legal..

Definitely won’t be able to explain mysterious millions that surfaced in your account.

Opportunity, lack of actual accountability since people seem more interested in defending their side (Guessing the propaganda has gotten better than we thought) coupled with a desire to increase wealth.

There are 2 different rows of reality and only one is right...

Either all the media is in a vast conspiracy to discredit republicans, or the media and experts think the GOP is lying..

Either 95+% of scientists are in a vast conspiracy to fake climate change, or the big oil companies are buying off 5% to muddy the waters..

Either there is a vast conspiracy to disarm America, or the gop is propagandizing their base with nonsense..

And it is pretty much impossible for both to even be half right..

Term limits. That needs to be passed. Also, when their term is over, they go back to something else. No perpetual salary. Eliminate the bribes and “tips”. Eliminate their speech fees. They need to be reminded they serve us, not lead us. It should also be easier to recall them when they violate their contract, as it is a breach.

people are corrupt.
how many people walk into a store, find $20 on the floor, and pocket it without trying to find the owner?
how many people steal produce from the self-pay stand?

I was once involved in loading a ship. the crane team demanded a case of soda for their help.

many many people are greedheads and will take advantage. when I was little I remember a truckload of potatoes turning over and all sorts of people were scrambling to grab.

politicians are notoriously corrupt because they have greater opportunities. lobbyists etc will literally walk in their door cold and offer them $tuff.
I suspect some pols, like Elijah Cummings, start out as idealists but can't resist the temptation to get rich.

Harry Truman supposedly said nobody gets rich in politics unless their crooked. he was by all accounts pretty honest.

1/ There is just too much going on in America for any one person to know it all. This is part of the reason for a party system so you can have specialists in certain areas working together.

2/ After a few hundred years of legislative work there is a mountain of paperwork that defines the regulatory functions of government. Way too easy to get lost in and scam.

3/ What the hell is going on when congress has to vote on one big massive package that they cannot read, understand, discuss, contribute, fix or erase. Just who is really writing the law and how did this power of congress get subverted?

4/ Self interest of the congress member. A person can only make a decision based on their own frame of reference. At times the voice of the representative constituency does make it through, but not always.

5/ Money. When payments to a political organization was judged as free speech democracy died and capatilcracry was born. Political bribes are standard operating procedure these days. Trump has bucked that trend as one who gives all his pay to charity.

There is also the fact that it might take corruption to get anything done in a corrupt system..

What are your options then???

Help no one and be an idealist???

Or help who you can while being corrupt?

Defending their side from what??

Accusations without anything to back it up?!?!

The 2 sides are selling such a different view of reality that someone has to be lying vastly more than the other.. and obviously the side being lied on should defend itself..

People are crooked.
They lie, cheat and steal at every level.
Politicians just get more attention because they are in the public eye.

I'm sure most of us can give examples of the good ole boy system at work.
How about certain kids being chosen over others because of their last names.
Ever been chewed out by a boss for doing exactly what a coworker did and they don't get the same lecture?

Like I said, everyone is crooked. Some can just get away with a bigger piece of the pie.

Politicians are not crooked..

People are crooked and it just so happens that being a politician puts you in the spotlight making it easier to see what you do wrong.

If you think their arent private, poor, middle class, rich, white, black, skinny, fat, LGBQT, straight people that are not crooked then you are naive.

The road to politics is in itself corrupt and tends to reward further corruption. People for the most part have lost their morals and are now corrupt enough to let it happen. Mostly the ones reeeeeeeing over Orange Man Bad. However all sides have a dog in this fight.

Politics tends to attract narcissistic and egotistical personalities. In addition, the system incentivizes and rewards "horse trading" and self-dealing. It has also devolved into a winner take all blood sport as well.

Politicians no longer serve the public, but more so themselves. We no longer have honorable Statesmen but crooks who see political office as a way to a lifetime of riches and graft.

Unfortunately, they've also crafted rules from the county level all the way up to the Feds that favor incumbency to limit any challengers.

I do think there are a small percentage of people who do try to the run out of a sense of wanting to change things for the better. However, they quickly realize the level of corruption in the system and that their ability as one person to make any kind of meaningful impact on REAL ISSUES is practically zero. I think most who have any honor and decency choose to leave politics. Most of those that stay for any length of time basically have given in to the dark side....
