The USS Nebraska off the coast of SoCal fired 4 Trident D-5 SLBM's towards a spot near Guam in a test of the system. As noted in the article the US is very close to fielding a new version of the W76 warhead. This lower yield warhead could be a prelude to a return to the Mark 4 MIRV Bus which allowed up to 14 MIRV's. the lower warhead yield could also mean that modifications have tightened the D-5's already counter force capable CEP of 90 meters.

Its also possible that this change is really geared for the upcoming Columbia class SSBN's which will replace the Ohio class and have less missile tubes. Nevertheless its an impressive test and they seldom fire this many missiles in a short period which point towards testing ahead of changes

Not likely that the US would waste a SLBM to strike Iran not to mention the possibility of spooking the Russians or the Chinese.

If we nuke Iran it will be from a B-2 and a W-61

More likely war would be between Iran & Israel given recent events. The SLBM change is in keeping with planned TRIAD changes.

It might be necessary if Russia were to share their radar and anti-aircraft technology, and we drag our feet into combat giving Iran time to mass produce the equipment.

Do you think anyone would use nuclear weapons first despite the # storm they'd unleash? It'd only happen if they had to because someone else did against their interests, but one nation using it would open a can of worms for the rest.

It's a testament to human nature as a species of primates that we need nukes for peace of mind. At the current pace within some amount of time whether its decades or centuries, this entire system will be done away with or it'll end up getting used.

As for nuking a nation with no nukes, that would have to be a no-go. Everyone is allied with someone and we have the capability to beat anyone already.
