Fellow members

I've been kicking around the notion of this thread for awhile now. A notion
that may challenge all of you for what you think of yourselves personally.
The hope is to simply open your mind up to how the world may see you
in sharp contrast to how you see yourselves. If that sounds scary to you
it gets worse when you look back at the world and see it differently.

Looking at ourselves can mean the discovery of something shocking we
never realized before. Whether thru a camera lens or the eyes of another
or even worse the whole world. But you might also became very angry
looking back at what's looking at you. That is of course if you see something
you never knew was there at all.

But I'd say relax it won't be that bad.

Moving on I would imagine not one of you reading this would say you think
of yourself as a bad person. Most likely in all seriousness there isn't going
to be one of us here who doesn't think of themselves as a good person.
So let's begin right there shall we?

Do you think you are a good person? And what makes you feel good about you?
Also do you accept that there are bad people in the world? If so where are they?
What are the odds that no one here at ATS is a bad person? Evil if you will?

" Most people are inherently good people. Most people want to live a simple
life cause no trouble and do no harm. The problem with most people being
inherently good is that their goodness blinds them from seeing how truly
wicked evil can be"

Claudia Pavonis

I hope you enjoy the discussion

A good person - One who is perceived by others and life in general as being good.
An evil person - One who is perceived by others and life in general as being evil.
A person that thinks they are good but evil - One who is perceived by others and life in general as being evil.
A person that thinks they are evil but is also evil - One who is perceived by others and life in general as being evil.

So with that, being good or evil is dependent on how a person is perceived by others. Doesn't matter how one perceives them-self.

Many people do things that adversely effects others and these people feel their actions are good for themselves disregarding what anybody thinks. Is that considered evil?

Im both.. leaning more one way than another at times. I try to be good, but if Im honest with myself.. I can be more comfortable being bad sometimes. I would hope we were all this way because good just wouldnt survive in a world if those who were evil couldnt switch sides sometimes or vice versa. Really good hearts need people who can do evil to do the things they can not or choose not to.

There can be no creation (“Good”) without destruction (“Evil”).

However, “Good” will only destroy so that creation may be facilitated.

“Evil” destroys for the sake of destruction itself.

Don't you think that this is very simplified? Complete contrary positions, you will not find that outside philosophical circle-jerks.

In every "good" is a bit or a lot or more or less "evil", and vice versa.

Every cycle of the earth has night and day. I so love the twilight.. be it morning, or evening.

There is silence in it. passiveness. good or evil are both extremes of the same thing. To excessively be one is simply denying the other.

There are no good nor bad people. Unless we witness them 24 hours a day. And no one has time for that.

“Good” and “Evil” are primal concepts, and are therefore, of course, “simplistic”.

However, because they Are intrinsic to the question posed in the OP, we must, first, define what those opposing concepts encompass.

Else wise how can we even discuss the two as “apparent opposites” as implied by the OP?

did you just steal a sandwich because you were hungry had no money and

hadn't eaten .......OR had you just beaten some one up?

There are degrees of good and bad?

However thats a good principle to live by.

Good and evil presupposes a cosmic concept. In simple terms there is good and there is bad. And levels of both.

Was 1st team Rugby from standard 7 or grade 9 by American standards I think.

So bullied some nice boys that didn't do anything wrong. Treated females like they were treats for me. Lied over small things constantly.

Even now that I'm trying as hard as possible to not view myself better than others I fumble constantly. Being "bad" comes naturally for me. Attempting to correct my "bad" things is hard and I have to constantly correct my knee jerk responses that come from my arrogance and how I feel I'm better than most.

I would say you are not trying hard enough!

And what would be the virtue in being good if it was that easy?

We are all perfectly imperfect beings, with much room for growth. "Good" and "evil" are relative terms, and often depend on one's perspective. Other times, on circumstances. No matter what we do or say, not everyone will consider it "good". But we have to make such judgments for ourselves while living and interacting in the world. That's life.

And then our real Judgment Day comes...

Maybe were just people trying to avoid bad the best we can, after all Utopia is an oxymoron. Some of us were given consciences. Some were never afforded the opportunity. Who decided the degree, good or bad ?
