Fair enough if sarcasm already has a punctuation, tomato, tomado and all ..

But is irony and sarcasm the same thing??

I didn’t see a sarcasm specific mark, but your logic is solid.

If you have to ask if it's sarcasm...it IS sarcasm.

That is a sign you are joking, but not sarcasm specific..

I think we could probably emote WAY more information if we used fonts to portray voice tones..

Not necessarily..

In person you either say something ridiculous in a normal voice tone or say something normal in a ridiculous tone to portray sarcasm..

Well the ridiculous in a normal voice tone works as you said, but the other half doesn’t..

If I say “oh yea, I guess she went to the store”..

In person you know if that is sarcasm , but not in text without a signifier..

If I say “ oh yea, I guess she took the space shuttle to the store..”

Well text or not.. that is sarcasm.

OP, the above is an example of how we expressed sarcasm and disinterest in the 90's.

e.g.

Your grandma fell in the shower and broke her hip? That sux! XD lol brbr

90's!? I still do that to this day! lol Damn, I'm old. DX

What sucked was trying to stop doing stuff like that when I was writing papers in college. Professors don't take kindly to lol's, XD's and most especially (_*_)'s. >_>;;

Around here they bite if you use all caps.

I just assume that when I am being sarcastic people will know it.

Usually it would be something absurd.

I like where you are going but italics already has a designation..

What??

Like book titles or something..

On a serious note , I wonder if some regular nobodies , through social media and such could establish one

On a serious note however, it's hard to gauge if someone is serious or joking when it comes to reading text. You can't hear the Voice Inflections . I joke around a lot and it gets me in trouble sometimes.

So it's good practice as I've seen right here on ATS as member will Type out the word Sarcasm like this "Sarcasm" to inform other member that sarcasm has been used😁

Oddly enough I heard the inflections in my head when you typed this...

You would use a gif from Encino Man.

And I had a healthy chuckle

Too much work...

It is kinda like with languages.. the easiest thing to say wins long term.

I think we need a one button type option

I don’t think so...

I think either you say something ridiculous, in a normal voice tone or you say something normal in a sarcastic voice tone..

If you say something normal in a normal voice tone... I think more often than not you will just be confusing....or an @$$.

Oh you poor sheltered soul...

Sometimes the best sarcasm is when someone takes it seriously.

Often the fact they "don't get it" is part of what makes sarcasm really work, especially when you then tell them it was sarcasm.

edit on 9/2/19 by The2Billies because: was I being sarcastic when I corrected my grammar? Hmmmmm

Do people using sign language ever use sarcasm?

Serious question

Of course they do. Deaf people have a sense of humor like (most) everyone else.
