His story gives some context to the Robber Baron Age, which remains the system we live under today. "Liberal" ideologies that brought much-needed fair trade and employment practices to the USA. Those ideals have been corrupted long ago, but the story still remains.

Heck, my grandfather worked in the mines, where he shopped at the company store for his pick and gaslight, then paid for a rental unit and food, etc etc. That was for scarce wages, not a whole lot different than slavery, in my book. When I knew him he was a master electrician and Olds mechanic, teaching auto shop to returning WW2 vets after losing his son, KiA 24 DEC 1944. He also received the 32nd Degree, what a guy. I guess the system does work after all.

Sold for the first time around 12 years old. They think it's normal by that point.

Think about how much easier it would be to train the babies of your current workers. Rather than kidnap older kids.
