Like the man I quote below, I was quite the liberal in my youth. I even worked on a Campaign for a Democratic candidate. Nixon was the evil Satan.
And sure, I know many people drift right as they acquire material possessions and, allegedly, up the ladder economically.

Except, things got worse after 9/11....George Bush was not what the country needed.

But, the real problem arose in 2008....transforming America indeed, and not for the better!!!! Socialism begins to rear its ugly head.
That election saw us begin the sink from middle class to working class, or even lower economically. Pension cuts and Obamacare did a number on me and many we knew. The racial divide deepens.

Leaving the Democrats...

But I am middle class. I have been given nothing by our government and have given too much to it. And it always wants more, telling me I have to pay my fair share. It is a sad state when you get to a point in life of maximum dollars earned that it is taken away by higher tax brackets and the loss of deductions.

I will never vote for anyone advocating for more government control. Or for anyone who is trying to denigrate me by name-calling or label-making. The reason is my life.

I patently rejected democrats a few months into Obama's first term. I was one of his more vocal supporters on ATS.

It was around that time that the left retreated from principled resistance and provided placating silence to Obama's continuation of Bush-era policies.

I gave up back then.

I'm still hoping we can steer this ship away from all of the things that fundamentally transformed America into the dystopia it is today. It's gonna take more than 1 presidential term. 16 years of neo-con/neo-liberal damage to the fabric of America.

I have been saying for a long time

There are many old school democrats that hate trump, but feel like the democrat party has gone insane

I get not liking trump for his personal foibles

But let’s say you were a life long union person

Trump is fighting for American jobs. He is trying to protect from base trade deals and open borders that hurt blue collar labor markets

And for this he is called a racist Nazi

And by extension, so is the union member who cares about their job

They personally attack anyone who disagree with them in the vilest ways, and want almsot total control of all of our ways of life, right down to banning cars and cows

The want to divide us all among race, and end due process for people, instead judging them by factors such as there sex or race as guilty until proven innocent

This doesn’t mean the republicans are perfect

And even though I am a Republican, I want at LEAST two parties to be successful and represent the people

But the democrats running the party are extreme and horrible, and they want total control of all of our lives

So I understand people fleeing the party

Good thread.

I am now called racist, homophobic, misogynist, and Islamaphobic. A gun-toting, Bible-believing bitter clinger. A deplorable. A white nationalist. Nazi. I can’t remember all of my Democrat party subtitles.

I expect there's a lot of people feeling just like this

In my youth, I was a Republican War Monger - - supporting Goldwater.

Today I am a Global Humanist and Environmentalist.

The Republican party left me. It is not what it was.

They are today the party of Greed.

One would think - - the most evolved (supposedly) species on earth would have evolved beyond the animalistic instinct/behavior of survival of the fittest.

One would think.

So what you were a war monger and didn’t change but the republicans left you?

I have many problems with the Republicans

But to claim they are the party of greed and the democrats aren’t?

What’s more greedy than wanting total control of the government and people’s way of life?

I was pretty much raised in a Republican household, and grew up listening to, of all people, Neal Boortz. I also ridiculed Dukakis. Being as such, I was not a fan of Bill Clinton at the time, and pretty much voted Republican except when there was a libertarian on the ballot, up through my first two years in college.

Never voted for Bush, never voted for Gore. But after 9/11 I started to become liberal.

ETA: I am not registered with any party.

But Goldwater was more of a "Libertarian" and Republicans didn't start any wars in the 1960s 😃

I identify with whoever wants to reduce my taxes. If Hillary was for that then I probably would have voted for her to be brutally honest but I checked her tax plan and no. She was raising mine. This last go around it was Trump and he delivered the goods. My taxes were indeed reduced. I will vote for him again and take my "crumbs" as Pelosi says compared to her 150 million net worth. Want healthcare, education, a job join the military. They offer all of those things and it would work for 60% of the people crying about it. Go sign up and stop watching the grass grow under your feet waiting for some fantasy that is never going to happen.

I think the Democrats are the greedy ones.
They take money from working women and men and use it to buy votes from the people that they keep under their feet.
They use their power and connections to line their pockets.
I think that is greedy.

Just asking,
Was not that pensions act actually signed in by congress?
Was it not the case the reasons for the plan was that the current pension concepts of the time were basically unobtainable, and not anything much to do with government, but more to do with pretty corrupt or incompetent marketeers?

Why would any species evolve away from that which made them the strongest species to begin with? Mankind's individual will, strength to survive and thrive, and need for dominance is absolutely the strongest trait we have, the most immediately identifiable trait to explain our individual successes. Nobody won in their life because they self depreciated or handcuffed themselves to artificially uplift those around them who would not or could not put in the effort to get it for themselves.

Handouts and welfare feed a beast that demands more and more the larger it gets. Starving the beast, however, exposes a simple (albeit cruel) fact: the true nature of mankind's primary problem is self correcting so long as you don't meddle with it and allow it to correct itself.

I eschew all parties and try to see things through the lens of the US Constitution and Bill of Rights.

It's made life so much simpler.

I thought George Bush was a Republican not a Democrat. You need to rethink your post.

I think the problem for some Democrats is that Trump aligns with many of their non far left policies. It is a tough choice because they really do not want to vote Red but they know what he is doing is good for the country.

If you gave him a different name and background and had time run on the same platform as a Democrat in 2016 he would have won also.
