Rus sian jet chases NATO plane away from defense minister's aircraft: TASS

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian fighter jet saw off a NATO warplane after it approached a plane carrying Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu over neutral waters in the Baltic Sea, the TASS news agency reported on Tuesday.

Shoigu’s aircraft had been returning to Moscow from the Russian Baltic region of Kaliningrad - which is surrounded by Poland and Lithuania - and was carrying a TASS reporter on board, the agency said.

It said a Spanish F-18 jet based in Lithuania had tried to approach Shoigu’s plane, prompting one of two Russian SU-27 fighter jets accompanying him to see it off.

Oh, look; here we have NATO looking for a bit of trouble.

Here we see the defense minister minding his own business flying over neutral waters to get back home to have his tea, escorted as usual by the Russian Air Force and some troublemaking NATO jet comes whizzing around and needs to be chased away...

Same games as always...except its usually Russia I am hearing about being escorted away. Either way we both do things to provoke responses from the other side to collect data and test responses. Its pretty much SOP at this point.

The Spanish fighter was probably ordered to do an ID pass of a plane that had a fighter escort. No big deal.

Be more of a story if a Nato country didn't send a plane up for a look really.

It is a routine event and standard policy to intercept, identify and shadow such aircraft. The Russians are transiting through Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian Flight Information Regions and the those controlling those FIR and UIRs have a perfect right to intercept within them. The Russians know what is going to happen and in essence it is a "set-up" purely for the Russian media.

The Spanish Hornet pilot is allowed to conduct a standard intercept and purely to get the bravado footage the Russian Su-27 pilot is filmed muscling. It isn't the first time that this has happened.

The Russians do exactly the same thing for unidentified aircraft that fly into their designated Kaliningrad Flight Information Region. Just like the NATO fighters they also intercept in international airspace.

It is just a set-up for the media in order to get exciting footage.

This is not unusual.

Happens quite often.

Now that they are paying up a bit they have to find something to do. Even if it is being nosy or making trouble.

The Russians do exactly the same for aircraft that fly into their Kaliningrad Flight Information Region in the Baltic. For example in the following video Russian Su-27s are sent to intercept and shadow a Swedish Air Force Gulfstream and a USAF RC-135. The intercepts are conducted in the international airspace portion of the Kaliningrad FIR.

The US and the likes of the Swedes could play the same game and send up a fighter escort and film footage of muscling intercepting fighters away, but they don't find it necessary to do so. The Russians are just playing it up for the media and getting the dramatic footage for effect.

Because everything russian media say is true. It has always been this way even in USSR.

What the heck!?

Why did NATO feel the need to approach the plane?
Wanting to go Top Gun style and do an inverted “wave” to the Russians?
I hope the Russians put that clown in Missile lock for a couple seconds to send him home a bit puckered.

First the protests in HK and now NATO fly by near the Russian min jet. Rather ironic.

And Russia flying near US jets. Yeah, really ironic. It's only been happening for 60 years.

SOP.

Happens all the time. US fighters intercept/identify Russian planes off shore on a fairly regular basis. Been happening since before you were born, before I was born.

There's nothing below board or unusual about this.

And note the professional interception. Now look at all the crap the Russians pull. Note the difference

Wow take it down a peg Goose. First off, that SOP when an aircraft WITH an fighter escort goes through ADIZ etc.
Also note its nothing like how the Russians do their intercepts.
Maybe if the Russians didn't invade neighbors people would feel all warm and fuzzy
Lastly, you put a weapons lock on a plane and all kinds of bad things can happen. So unless you want to kick off a war its just not done

Standard NATO policy is to intercept, identify etc. Pilot was therefore not being a "clown" and just doing his job. You hope that the Russian "put that clown in Missile lock for a couple seconds?" Jeez, fella! Get a grip, man.

Only in your head. The two are entirely unconnected. NATO and Russia do this all the time, but NATO pilots tend to be more professional and less reckless about it.
