look into Scottish free masonry , many traveled Europe building as others have said , many went to rome
and other European cities to earn their living and ply their trade.
One of the best stories I know of a mason and his apprentice is that one from Rosslyn chapel , the master mason leaves to work in Europe to study the
original inspiration for the pillar . and asks his apprentice to await his return.
Upon his return the master mason is so surprised that the apprentice had completed the pillar and at the quality of his work that it affronts him and
his ego , he feels that he has been shown up by his apprentice and then he has him killed or there abouts!
