Probably gang related.

Up til the OP I had no idea of the concept of a garlic festival.

So it's not hard to imagine that there could be competing families, or garlic mafia's.

Odd thing to target if it's not gang/mafia related.

Personally I think Big Garlic was responsible. I think Big Garlic had a hand in this.

But seriously, this is obviously bad. Why would someone do this. Also coincidentally after I was reviewing 2019's school shooting stars about 10 hours ago...

The festival has been celebrated since 1979, this would be the 40th anniversary.

Just heard confirmed report that child killed was only 3 years old.

Lived in California my entire life, I don’t remember anything like this ever happening at the garlic festival before.

What is happening to our society?

Compassion required. One life lost is one too many lives lost. One injury is one too many injuries.

There is something terribly wrong in this country, and I don't know exactly what it is. What goes through someone's mind when they decide to do this? My gut instinct says maybe he just wanted to kill people out of general anger, but anger at what? A run-in with a rude cop? Getting fired? A mean social media post? Car broke down? Ran out of booze?

Those are silly reasons, but I cannot think of a non-silly reason for anyone to do this. There was something mentally wrong with him... seriously mentally wrong. Fox is reporting that he simply unloaded into a crowd, and was "quiet and deliberate." How does that thought enter the mind of someone who is functional in society? I mean, I get angry sometimes... steam out of the ears type angry... capable of doing bad things type angry. I think everyone has at some point. But never, ever, have I been so angry that I wanted to shoot up random people. That just doesn't make any sense.

That's just... demonic...

Now I know you don't like it when us dumb liberal progressive types point this out, but I'm gonna do it anyway.

The simple reason is easy access to very efficient and effective weapons. Some people just want to watch the world burn and will hurt others in a fit of rage.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think guns should be banned or limited, as I've said before the genie is out of the bottle and ain't going back in, all you can do try and minimise damage at this point .

Anyway it's sad day when you can't go to a bloody garlic festival without some nutter shooting up the place.

Guns were much easier to get access to 30+ years ago than today yet this type of thing didn't happen every other month.

Something has fundamentally changed with people.

I think there's always been those among us prone to being lunatics, I can only imagine Jack the ripper with semi automatic weapon, then again he couldn't be so stealthy and get away with it for so long, I guess the advantage there is guns are loud and being stealthy isn't an option.

Do you think this person shooting up the festival would have the gonads to try it with a knife ? It takes a special kind of commitment to do that, pulling a trigger is easy.

However, something has changed, people are angry and projecting that anger far more now than in the past, it's very troubling. A

No. That simply doesn't make sense. Grimpachi stated it very well just above: this is something new. This simply didn't happen 30 years ago. With school parking lots full of kids' trucks with high-powered rifles in the gun rack, no one got shot. Here where I live, about everyone carries a gun at some point. The chances are much greater than 50-50 that the guy who just walked by you is packing. But shootings are very rare, and shootings like this, senseless shootings without a true target, are unheard of.

You nailed the actual problem, though: "Some people just want to watch the world burn and will hurt others in a fit of rage." What we need to do is figure out why these people exist and how we can make sure that that kind of anger is erased. I suspect a lot of the issue is contained in this thread I was reading earlier. We can't communicate any more. We seem to have forgotten how. There is no compromise and no listening to the ideas and opinions of others. There is only our way, when we say, how we say, why we say, or dammit, you're a [racist|commie|supremacist|fascist|socialist|deplorable|snowflake|Nazi]!

There's your problem. Now, how do we go about solving it? How do we regain the civilization we have lost?

Why would you think someone hell-bent on harming others would go with something so weak as a knife? Does he have a car can he get a car how about a 5 pound bag of fertilizer mixed with diesel fuel and a self-made blasting cap? Crazies have even used pressure cookers.

Let me ask you another question, do you think he would have had the guts to do that in an open-carry state?

It makes no difference if he was in an open carry state he was still shot and killed right, perhaps he may have been stopped sooner, perhaps.

The difference is, killing with a knife is up close and personal, shooting from a distance into a crowd of unarmed people is what a gutless coward would do,that same coward would unlikely try it with a knife.

Well to start with we try and help those falling through the cracks, that would be a start.

As far as the rest of the nutters go I'm at a loss, there are over 7 billion of us on this planet and basic math tells us more people = more nutjobs.

Regardless though the reason we don't see as many mass shootings in other western countries purely comes down to access to weapons, we have just as many nutters as you guys do.

now saying this tweet is unavailable........the typical MO is to shoot the shooter, but if this guy was already down it does make one think........

As many know i had a few friends shot in Vegas , and with one in particular we often speculate that the shooter was alive and subdued when they got to him...........

Were not big conspiracy theorists but it sure as hell starts to make you one.........

Hell, we still havent gotten any answers about the Batman movie killer and hes alive........they put the lid on that.....

Thats just a tool of the man who wields it.........the issue isnt the instrument...its the wielder......

As someone else said, it was much much much easier to get firearms in the 90s and 80s and yet it wasnt this prolific.....

The problem?

1. Culture of narcicism and growing up w out consequence.

2. Failure of mental health.

3. pumping drugs into a populace wholesale........

Who remembers when we DIDNT have advertisements for drugs, where the laundry list didnt include suicide, thoughts of suicide, or harm to others.......

That started mid 90s, and if you look at it, lines up to the issues were having now.......

Add that to lack of parenting, using tech to raise your kids, complete breakdown of responsibility...........

What do we expect?

Well I guess we expect a whole lot more people to get bullet holes from psychopaths on the high ground looking for easy targets.

I agree to a point however the tool is important , for example if I'm cutting wood with a hand saw it's a hell of a lot slower than with a chainsaw, can you see where I'm coming from here?

Get rid of the partisan bullshit propaganda. It brainwashes people and make them angry. It's designed to divide people and make them angry. This might accumulate over time in some people, and then a small spark could set off an explosion if they are already unstable. The spark could be i.e. a lost job, a partner/lover or whatever. This propaganda has always been there, more or less I guess, but it's even more present today with social media.
