Yeah. Just start with common ground. For example, all parts of the political spectrum that makes up "We The People" should be on the same page for wanting big dark money, corporations, and special interest donors out of our political process. Imagine the progress we could make if we all just stood our ground together and demanded it.

Those donors and corporations are “we the people” as well, private citizens like you and I.

"Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action."
—George Washington

My guess is it will take another 100 years or so to relearn that lesson.

I have no problem discussing political opinion with anyone, and for the most part, everyone in real life is also more then willing to do the same.

The problem is that the tiny percentage of ignorant blow hards, on message boards, in media, and in real life, get all the coverage.

Dont be fooled, people are much more civil then the media wants you to believe.

When corporations and big money spenders are able to flood the airwaves with their messages, they can effectively drown out the voices of other citizens. This undermines the political equality that gives our government legitimacy.

Most publicly-held corporations don’t even disclose their political spending even to their shareholders. And then you have SuperPACs, which are allowed to raise and spend unlimited amounts of money because they don’t contribute directly to candidates and are basically independent. That's just rotten.

I remember reading about a poll that said about two-thirds of small business owners felt Citizens United was bad for small businesses, and I believe it was over 80% that thought money in politics played a negative role overall.

I have listened.

Really.

I have.

Those that want to turn the country communist want to turn the country communist.

I mean, what else do we need to hear?

Why are we even entertaining dialogue?

One side will eventually get their way because they abuse and manipulate the electoral system and vote in communist assholes.

I'm just glad I'm old.

I'll be dead or dying by the time the asstards get their way.

I'd like to think what you are saying is true. But the thing is people like my father-in-law are mentally corrupted. He watches Fox News for 2 or 3 hours straight. I've been at his house and have to endured listening to it. There used to be a time when the "news" would just play what people said that day right out of the politicians mouth. All Fox News does is make commentary, opinion, and tell the viewer what to think and how to think. It's not news. There's nothing factual about it. It's all opinion.

So as I said, there can be no civil conversations when one side has absolutely no distinction between opinion and fact. I can't tell you how many times I've heard people express a political opinion and then I ask them is that "a fact or an opinion." And they proudly proclaim what is obviously an opinion is a FACT.

You just can't have any discussion with people who think their own opinions are given to them from God.

It's painfully obvious to me what has happened to our society.
We have raised multiple generations now "including my own" that has been told their entire lives that they are special, their opinions "no matter what they are" are worthy of worldwide recognition and that their mere participation in any activity is cause for reward.

The simple art of conversation and compromise has been lost.
hell, just disagreeing with someone today ends in hurt feelings cuz words ya know.

We do have communism in this country already. It's just that it is NOT the kind of communism that is in the worker's favor. What we have is communism in favor of the billionaires and CEOs. It's not rocket science. The billionaires pay the lobbyists to force the politicians to pass laws creating cartels and monopolies in exchange for campaign financing. It's called corporatism.

"Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power." Benito Mussolini

You never listen. You are just a tool for the political right. Honestly in the last 50 years name one law that has been passed that has been in the worker's favor??? THERE ARE NONE!!!!

If we had communism in this country don't you think the workers would be getting better pay and the dollar would buy more goods and services that it does???????

It doesn't matter. People like you will NEVER get it. George Carlin got it:

Simple litmus test.

Do you want to increase the size and scope of government or not?

Really simple f#cking question.

If you want to grow the size and scope of government then you're pretty much anti-Constitution.

You can rape and bastardize definitions to justify this prison-rape of individual freedom, by why not just be f#cking honest and say you want government control and that personal responsibility scares the living sh#t out of you!

You are so brainwashed. The size of government is irrelevant. It doesn't matter what you pay in taxes. All that matters is the purchasing power of your take home pay.

Look.

I'm not replying to anyone specific, but the OP has a point and his point has being proved.

The point was civil dialogue on opposing points of view and how (I think) to get beyond that, but people come here to sling mud (left AND right) to score points and prove their position.

How can we have civil conversations with the other side?

Both sides think the other side is brainwashed. Civil conversation doesn't matter. George Carlin is right. NOTHING is going to change. Trump did not drain the swamp. All Trump did was give the billionaires a big tax break and gut consumer protection laws. Once again Trump has shown Trickle-Down economics just doesn't work.

You're generally right about much commentary on FOX news. But where you miss miserably is in failing to mention the remaining 90% of media is....just...as...bad...or...far worse.

Roger. You're one of the ones who *is* the problem.

Pot, meet Kettle. Holidays must be a real hoot around your house.

Are you sure?

You seem to have no problem with the executive branch becoming the be-all end-all of authority (as long as it's your guy). *That* is pretty much anti-constitution, because it thwarts checks and balances.

And that is a

Really simple f#cking question.

So, do you want to have a dialogue, or do you simply want to accuse those unlike you as "the othe?" as you're doing?

SImple.

True, but we *need* to get back to discourse, for the sake of us all.
