Designated 115 this is the first "type 51C" to be built... using the Type-51C as a starting point instead of the new type-52B and C design.

This suggests the Chinese are trying different hull combinations and not necesarilly sticking with "newer is better" theology.

It also seems like a cost effective way to upgrade the fleet quickly.

Dalian Shipyard in Dalian, Liaoning Province is currently building a new air-defence missile destroyer (DDG) possibily designated Type 051C for the PLA Navy (PLAN). The first of the class, launched on 28 December 2004, carries a pennant number of 115. The destroyer is said to be fitted with the Russian-made RIF/S-300F (NATO codename: SA-N-6) medium-range air defence missile system and the 30N6E phased array radar. The ship is expected to be commissioned in 2006 in the PLAN North Sea Fleet.

The Type 051C is the PLA Navy’s first dedicated fleet air defence missile destroyer, with its design concept similar to the U.S. DDG-51 Arleigh Burke class. The destroyer has a total of 48 RIF missiles housed in six large-size revolver vertical launching systems (VLS), with two launchers on the bow deck behind the main gun and four in the structure in front of the stern helicopter deck. Like the DDG-51, the Type 051C has no helicopter hanger to carry its own shipborne helicopter. Eight anti-ship missiles instead of 16 found on other Chinese-built destroyers are installed at midship due to the limited space.

The general hull design of the Type 051 appears to be identical to the Type 051B (Luhai class) missile destroyer, possibly with a slightly larger displacement. The ship lacks the radar cross-section reduction features found on the Type 052B/C destroyers built by Jiangnan Shipyard in 2004. The exact powerplant arrangement of the ship is unknown, but Ukraine-made gas turbine is one of the possible options.

China seems to be building alot of Destroyers lately but only 1 or 2 each in every class, then a new class...

When will China mass-produce a particular class of Destroyers?

When they find suitable for their needs, first few alpha phase try outs? I liked the catamaran concept shown before, but were those ranked as destroyer cant recall that.

Today read on newspaper that China planning to raise its military expenditure 12% on this year, surely with the current economical growth its possible, but still its prettty high for year.

China is pumping stuff out faster than every other country in the world it seems.

They have the right idea. Instead of making one or two, then going:
'It works O.K. let's make 10', they've got 1/2, then they upgrade, make another 1/2, then upgrade, etc, etc, to the point soon enough they'll catch up with the rest of the World/get in front of it and start pumping out ten's of them.

Yes, but the key is that China has ALOT of ground to make up.

But with the way they're doing it, they'll catch up quickly. Buying technology from Russia and Israel(America) and then advancing upon it, will have them gain and match Russia within the next few years and with time America. (Once they put enough money into their military, although that has gone up by 12%(roughly) again this year.)

Apparently PLAN just signed for 4 Type 054As (054 with 32cell VLS with HHQ-16 and upgraded radar system), the first of two Type 052Ds have been laid two month ago, 4 Type 052Cs have been signed, 2 Type 51Cs are under construction (115 and 114/116), 5 Yuan to be built in two years, possibly another 6 Songs in two years, Varyag is going under refit currently getting rust removal and restoration.

PLA will have a force reduction of 200G by 2006 to gain more $$ to get newer tanks, more HQ-15s and more high tech equipment.

PLAAF will reduce its force by 400-700 planes by 2010 but at the same time purchase more Su-30MK2, J-10A, J-10B, FC-1, WZ-10 in two years and advanced trainers, tankers, Y-8 Balance Beams, KJ-2000s................

There's just so much thats planned.

P.S. Varyag would go under refit but not necessarily for combat, e.g. Aircraft Carrier landing and takeoff training.

052C is by my opinion the sexiest destroyer ever built

Are you Chinese? If you are then you should know this already. Go and search on the web and find some PLA related websites, they have the news posted already. I don't make these stuff up you know.

052D is supposed to have a upgraded SSM, improved version of the phased array radars, fixed some problems with the Aegis like integrated weapons, radar and sensor system and new torpedoes, but these came straight off the net and you know how Chinese military works, they keep their mouth shut and people have to keep on guessing. The 052D CANNOT be confirmed but most likely true. 054As have been confirmed, 052Cs have been confirmed, Varyag is a speculation from the newest picture taken, its landing surface have been stripped and seems like its getting rust removal and a new landing surface.

Before China will bother to develope Air Craft Carriers, it'll test them to see how effecting they are for the PLA's Air Force.

But, I'm glad to see China's pushing its Tech forward. It'll force other Countries to stop taking 5/10 years longer then they're meant to, to build their ships, etc.

You can say its good or bad, but last time global arms race lead to war in the end. Thats what most fear when China pushes huge amount of its GDP to arms. Surely some see it positive too as world wont be so much polarisised by US.

Those are destroyers, where you get something about Chinese aircraft carriers? And how can you test em before having prototypes, pretty hard to make test on land conditions for such as you have very fast moving target.

AirCraft Carrier from him and I've seen bits all over the net on China looking into making one.

As for it leading into a War, never know might force a second Cold War and a nice bit of peace for a while - but that all depends on who we get in charge of America.

Actually China only spends around 1.4% of our GDP on the military but with our growth we can push double digit increase in military budget every year with continous decrease of military spending in our GDP.

Will we see the "great" USN pacific fleet be challenged fro the first time in 20 years??..Interesting..
PLAN is still a brown water navy but they've got the right idea by building ports in Gwadar(Pakistan) and Burma...Soon they may contest the indians in their own backyard.. The Indian Ocean..
