I think the symbolism that goes around most peoples mind that it is their own "cross to bear".

Sometimes an article of clothing or a piece of jewelry is just a reminder that we've all got our cross to bear so practice the Golden Rule as much as is humanly possible. It's also a great quick opportunity to compliment some one on their self decoration....be it a cross, a dog tag, or a set of earplugs.

But yeah, for a while I thought the same as you.

These days I think Jesus would be more concerned about whats in our hearts than whats on our body or clothes.
