Why didn't monkeys evolve blowholes and fins? There's quite a bit to eat in the oceans, and the Earth's surface is mostly ocean.

Well, forget monkeys, because a mammal (and ancient ancestor of hippos) did in fact evolve blowholes and fins and became the cetaceans. This began to happen 45 million years ago, several million years before monkeys and apes diverged from ancient simians.

Not all animals will follow the same evolutionary path. That's why the bio world is so diverse. There are many different types of environments -- both macro and micro -- in which a wide variety of life can find a niche and exploit. Evolution allowed monkeys to successfully exploit their environment without ever needing to fly like a bird.

Back to the cetaceans: we still have hippos today (i.e., they all didn't evolve into whales and dolphins) because while having a nostril on top of your head might be helpful, having nostrils at the end of your nose if you're a hippo is not that much of a disadvantage. Those blowholed creatures probably found a new environment, anyway, and moved on away from the ancient hippos. Those ancient hippos likely wouldn't have needed to compete with them directly, so not all hippos species needed to evolve blowhole to compete for resources/survive.

And, by the way, a wandering nostril and feet evolving into fins flippers is a much less drastic bit of evolution than what would be required for a monkey to fly. A cetacean skeleton is still very recognizably mammal, while a bird's skeleton is so much different is the material make-up. For a monkey to become bird-like would take a hell of a lot more evolution than a hippo evolving into a porpoise.

Well it's a bad theory then. Environment is evolution. Real evolution. Not the stupid Darwin type that's bull#. The smell of a girls vagina depends on the local diet and microbial populations. Visiting men from neighboring land have a preference. Boom: evolution. Doesnt take bititilionns of years. Chinese didn't Han out in Arizona for 6 godamillion years before getting a tan that sticks.
