Look mate; I'm a white working class male in his early fifties who lives in North East England.
I lived through and experienced the worst of the Thatcher years.
I witnessed the false dawn of Blair and our betrayal by champagne socialists.
I've endured the austerity of that wanker Cameron and those who have followed.

I can assure you, I, just like millions like me, have not benefitted from the UK's colonial past.

What I have I got myself through hard graft and I sure as hell am not going to apologise to anyone for that.

The free NHS etc was paid for by my taxes, my parents taxes and my grandparents taxes.

Speaking of which; all my grandparents came from Ireland....but we've paid our dues.

As for former colonies:
New Zealand recently had a referendum on whether to change their national flag which has a Union flag in the corner to some other design.
They voted to keep their current one.
Guess they don't resent their colonial past.

How many nations actively seek to be part of The Commonwealth and freely choose to keep Liz as Head of State?

As for Hong Kong.
How many people from Hong Kong have you actually spoken to and asked them if they preferred British control or Chinese?
Or are you simply applying your pre-conceived and cast in stone opinions to a situation without any supportive evidence at all?

Why on earth would I feel any remorse whatsoever for the UK's 'colonial past'?
It had absolutely nothing to do with me and I assure you neither I or any of my ancestors have benefitted from it.

Do you think modern day French, Spaniards, Portuguese, Belgians etc feel any sort of remorse?
What about the descendants of the Mongols, Incas, Persians, etc?

Every one of them had empires that were built on the defeat, subjugation, suffering and exploitation of other peoples, nations and/or civilisations.

The sins of the fathers are NOT passed on.....unless of course you happen to be British!

Hear, hear.

Geez, another one.

Another what?

That's a strange way to protest British colonial remorse, by putting the British flag in Hong Kong's parliament ...

How's colonialism going down there at Clowning street and Buckingham palace ?
