The article I read was about many things unrelated to this, but the one sentence that stood out to me was (paraphrasing); "it used to be that the philosophical standard was 'I think, therefore I am.' "

"Now the standard is, 'I am observed, therefore I am'."

So true it seems, so sad, and so true.

It might even be worse than that... "I am validated, therefore I am."

I don't get it. But it seems everyone needs validation these days or they go find a safe space... perhaps after throwing a public tantrum.

Might be more that, " I imagine that I am validated, therefore I am."

Yes? No?

The Latin is (I think) Cognitum ergo sum.

And you are correct!

Not too many know how to live within their own skin, to enjoy their own company.

Our society has become so shallow and vapid that we find ourselves boring.

Even though I love communicating, there is a this part of me, I just want to be left alone. I am confused by people that want attention. Although to be honest when I was young I did want attention - so a part of me understands the current weird. I hope there is a new weird coming on. One that lets individuals be what they are. And not the sex part, the soul part.

I think that super physical awareness and hyper sexual thinking has really devastated so many individuals. Where are their minds in connection to their souls these days? I will have to stop. I am not a great human being at all, but man I do appreciate my kindness time to time. The ways I have done this and that. I have to think about that though, in my youth there were times that I thought I was bigger than I really am. More pride than accomplishments. More pride than helpfulness. And so on.

I try to walk in others shoes. But when I do, I feel how dumb their shoes are after a time........

It's interesting to watch people when power goes out.

At home? My wife and I light candles, sit together and enjoy each other, read or talk.

But people without their internet tether absolutely panic!

If a tree falls in the woods, and nobody sees it, did it happen?

If an SMS message is tweeted and nobody replies did it happen?

I personally have struggled with this myself (after my attention getting screaming for validation post that I just made, LOL!). Today I felt really lonely... I think that's why I shared it.

On your subject, I think it's one of the fastest paths to self destruction- to define ourselves via the amount of validation and attention/acceptance we receive (aka how many likes on a photo, or how many stars or flags on an ATS post). I think it's natural to seek attention, and I think there are healthy ways to go about it. But sometimes just maybe the attention-validation seeking can become desperate and unhealthy. I don't have any answers, I'm just here to agree with you... it is sad and so true.

The other day a bunch of us were carpooling a semi long trip home and one of them said, "I knew I should have brought a car charger, my phone just died! What am I going to do now?" He sounded frustrated.

I said, "now we'll be forced to have a conversation with one another."

He laughed.

I am more drawn to an earlier version. I AM I AM. To me it sums it all up. Almost a binary simplicity.

They only panic if they do not have a generator. A generator to power a phone should be easy enough to make, if your willing to learn, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal...……..Sorry, I kind of got off topic there.

“ I observe and research therefore I am “

Mankind has never had more information than at this point in history.

Best of all it’s all available at your fingertips .

Use it and never take anyone’s word as gospel .

Imagine if a Washington or a Jefferson was popped into our reality.

They would be amazed... we essentially have the entire history of the world, almost everything ever written and any recent fact at our fingertips... a device we can use to talk in real time to anyone on the planet.

And... then we would have to explain to them that we use the device to look at pictures of cats and fight with people we don't know.

To the OP... the internet and our culture has ensured that nobody lives in the "now" anymore.

They all live in the past and the future.

So there are not a whole lot of people that "live" anymore.
