I haven't started a thread to pick the computer guys on ATS for some time now

I've been using CCleaner FREE for years....best way to keep the computer free of bad stuff, like hidden .exe files in your temporary files.
I don't know if all that is true, or if there is something better.
I also heard that CCleaner isn't what it used to be....and don't remember if someone bought them or if they in some other manner sold out.

The reason this even becomes a concern is that we could not do the latest update. The desktop is fine, but the laptop would install and gets some error message about writing files.
Looking up the error message it was suggested to run as an admin.....tried that...nada.
Tried uninstall/reinstall....nada. So we are now using the older version.....hoping the next update corrects the problem.

So, considering something new and free.
Not Glary, as it doesn't do as good a good at removing files. OR removes cookies I want to keep.

Any ideas????
Either for doing the update on CCleaner.....or giving it the boot altogether.

Thanks!!!!

ETA
I should also add we use Webroot as our AV....and also Malwarebytes.

I use PCMatic on all 4 of my P.C's and have for over 10 years.

It cleans everything and looks for stuff too, it also sets your internet connection up with the right settings.

I have never had a virus and don't mind the $50 a year fee.

it's pretty awesome I must say.

I was hoping for free, or at least cheaper than $50.00 per year.

making shortcuts for things like the built in disk clean up tool would be the smartest choice.
all these cleaners don't do anything your pc cant already do.

CCleaner.
Period
Found a new tool for cleaning the registry - Wise Registry Cleaner
Can clean the registry , optimize the system , and compact the registry

So
Do a full system restore point
1) CCleaner for clearing system
2) Clean the registry (careful only to clean the ones considered safe to delete by Wise)
3) Optimize system (registry)
4) Compact registry

Once a month .
Less often if you are not
1) A Windows Insider
2) Avid gamer installing and uninstalling games
3) Avid geek always trying "new stuff"
4) All the above like me

This is the method I use for a kick-butt performance

I had a virus or Trojan hit C-cleaner one time, it also wiped out my antivirus. I downloaded Malwarebytes I think and it caught the culprit. I then reloaded Ccleaner and a new anti-virus again, I lost both the antivirus and ccleaner during the fix. They could not be repaired. When I got the antivirus back online again it cleaned up the rest of the virus remnants.

I also lost ccleaner once because it could not be updated a few years ago. I just downloaded a new version of it. There was a message about that one in Ccleaner, I pushed the upgrade off till it finally stopped working a couple of months later.

I use ccleaner every night before shutting down the computer. Using it can keep any spyware from getting put into the system. I have not had a virus since I started faithfully doing that. I also learned not to go to too many medical sites without using ccleaner in between or I only get results the Pharma companies want me to see. I have mine so it erases almost everything. It does take longer that way, but I do not like my browser steering me to look for only things that I already looked at.

I do not think this will help you but I know that Ccleaner has been good for me.

Yes , that is the reason Piriform has a new process.

Wise tells you which items are safe to remove??

How important is it to update CCleaner?

I manually scrape my file system and my registry when I have issues.

If I find something pandemic in terms of infection, I reinstall from scratch.

Never trusted CCleaner to "automatically" do what it does. If you search around online a bit, you'll find that it does some questionable things that impede functionality of some legitimate services and applications.

Malware isn't Thanos, it's very easy to beat.
I've been in the computer industry, professionally, and as a hobby for decades now.

Yes , Wise lets you know
However , I create a full system restore point using Windows 10 before (just in case) .I have never had to use it though.

I update CCleaner just as soon as I get the notification there is a new version.
Piriform , due to that "attack" they encountered , implemented an automatic "emergency update" process in case it is needed.

Any idea why the laptop cannot update ccleaner?
Error message has something to do with writing issue.
