Mexico aims to avoid tariffs with potential deal limiting migrants going north, allowing U.S. to deport Central American asylum seekers - Washington Post

Faced with Trump’s threat to impose steadily rising tariffs on goods imported from Mexico beginning Monday, Mexican officials have pledged to deploy up to 6,000 national guard troops to the area of the country’s border with Guatemala, a show of force they say will make immediate reductions in the number of Central Americans heading north toward the U.S. border.

The Mexican official and the U.S. official said the countries are negotiating a sweeping plan to overhaul asylum rules across the region, a move that would require Central Americans to seek refuge in the first country in which they arrive after leaving their homeland.

This is what happens when you have a REAL president who actually cares about America. Things are ACTUALLY getting done.

First the President issues the threat.

Then Mexico came to the table to negotiate.

Then Mexico Meets migrants at southern border with armed forces as a sign of progress in the ongoing negotiations.

Now we have this.

This is what getting real results looks like. Must really suck to be wrong all the time like the left is. But hey, just another win I'm not tired of yet.

I hope they grab the probably 200K people currently within the boarders of mexico heading north, on their way down to their southern border to enforce it.

Either way, nice to see mexico being so "enthusiastic"(threats work) to help out with this situation that benefits both countries citizens.

This is awesome for a lot of reasons.

One of those some of you might not like is that if this works and the numbers go down and stay down. Well that means trump just negotiated his way out of the need for a wall.

I mean lets be honest here. This if it is real(the link is still broken) is a much better way to deal with this problem than a wall or detaining tons of people.

This is a win for us against the two parties. They both would have to shut up about the border. No wasting our money on a wall. Win win. Man I hope this is true.

We'll still need a wall only because we'll end up with some leftist asshole as president someday who will want open borders and it's harder to tear down actual walls.

Boooo!

Don't be divisive. Let us all share in a win together.

Give up the wasteful wall and let the history books say trump fixed some immigration policies.

The American people won't allow that. It's better to get rid of one President, than to have additional thousands of Americans killed by illegals and drugs coming across a border lined with red/white/blue "Welcome!" mats.

Non-sequitur.

The wall eliminates the need for detaining tons of people, and is not subject to the whim of the current Mexican President/Policy.

It is true, the deal is signed, the tariffs are put on indefinite hold - and the wall is still being built.

The wall was meant to stop the large number of people crossing the dessert.

This new deal puts a stop to the large number of people crossing the dessert.

The wall cost billions and will take years to build. Using literal tons of resources.

The deal cost nothing and was done with the stroke of the pen. Resources used: 1 piece of paper.

The deal > the wall. We don't need to waste our money on the wall. If this deal works the way it is written. The mexican government becomes the wall. And a much more effective one. Imo

I don't believe this deal has any concrete actions involved in it. It is ALL political theater. There never was going to be any additional tariffs and Mexico was already going to take these actions. Where Trump is wise is that he twisted it to show that he made it come about when it was actually already in action. How much more agriculture are we selling mexico that wasn't part of NAFTA? I would guess none.

Another thread on this site deals with Idiocracy. This is how we get there. With this political bukakee.

Mexico Agreed to Take Border Actions Months Before Trump Announced Tariff Deal

The deal to avert tariffs that President Trump announced with great fanfare on Friday night consists largely of actions that Mexico had already promised to take in prior discussions with the United States over the past several months, according to officials from both countries who are familiar with the negotiations.

Friday’s joint declaration says Mexico agreed to the “deployment of its National Guard throughout Mexico, giving priority to its southern border.” But the Mexican government had already pledged to do that in March during secret talks in Miami between Kirstjen Nielsen, then the secretary of homeland security, and Olga Sanchez, the Mexican secretary of the interior, the officials said.

Mexico Never Agreed to Farm Deal With U.S., Contradicting Trump

Mexico never agreed to buy more U.S. farm products as part of a deal reached late Friday on border security and illegal immigration that averted the threat of U.S. tariffs, said three Mexican officials, contradicting a claim made by President Donald Trump.

But hey, whatever, right?

The wall was meant to stop the large number of people crossing the dessert.

No, the wall will stop people from illegally entering our country.

This new deal puts a stop to the large number of people crossing the dessert.

Good - and the wall will take care of the a large percentage of the smaller numbers that still try.

The wall cost billions and will take years to build. Using literal tons of resources.

The cost has already been allocated, and it is being built now, and will likely be done in another year or two, providing jobs to the people who are building it.

The deal cost nothing and was done with the stroke of the pen. Resources used: 1 piece of paper.

Well, it did take hours and hours of negotiating, and the final hammer to drive the nail home - the threat of tariff's that would hurt Mexico far more than us.

The deal > the wall. We don't need to waste our money on the wall. If this deal works the way it is written. The mexican government becomes the wall. And a much more effective one. Imo

And one that could evaporate a the whim of the Mexican government.

But your argument is meaningless - the wall is being built and will be completed. Get over it.
