I heard they poop a lot which is expected....i imagine it is like a budgie on steroids though.

Can you give me the detailed lowdown on what to expect if I go this route??

They are waterfowl. They need a lot of water as they eat, and they spray a mixture of the two all over the place... they spray water everywhere when the drink. They crap everywhere (especially IN their drinking water, just as in nature); the mix of quack-ling turds, water and food begins to reek very quickly.

We change out their bedding daily, and it still stinks. We will start them in the bathtub for an hour a day once they are about 10 days old, and it does help keep them much cleaner. You will want to clean the tub afterward... We will move these guys outside, as soon as they start to feather up. That can take two or three weeks, but depends on the breed and the weather.

At this point... they are teenagers. Get them out of the house, or slowly lose your sanity...

A sorta related question....

Do your outside ducks act as security as well?

I remember when I was in Germany that they patrolled their outer perimeter with geese.

Are ducks territorial also and are they useful that way?

I'm waffling between getting ducks (we have a pond for them and I LOVE duck eggs) or quail (I really like them as well, eggs and meat) but have been thinking about the different aspects of both.

Both are pretty good at pest control, I've heard.

Any thoughts?

They aren't very territorial, but they are quite vocal when something is amiss... especially at night. They are great pest control. They will eat not only insects, but moles and small mice as well. We free-range ours during the day, and keep them in a coop at night (we have a lot of predators here... big ones).

We have Japanese quail, but they are far too small to free-range here. Tiny eggs, but insanely good. We have a few local restaurants that buy our duck and quail eggs, even after supplying all of our friends and family first.

We tried raising a goose ONCE... it tried to kill our poor Fed-Ex driver... bit me, bit the wife, then bit the bullet. Tasted good, though...

I came here for Duck Pics.

Here ya go... one of my harlequin mallards...

His name is "Thumper", as he is an amorous drake. He is not a sexually violent deviant, as others have implied. The word around the coop, is that he is a caring, even generous lover. We had two drakes that were rough with the ladies, not gentlemen like "Thumper"... they got re-homed quickly. (We couldn't eat them, they had names. That's a rule here at Rancho Insano.)

We're a little touchy, aren't we? By "we" I mean you.

I agree with the evil duck eater- I think some duck pictures are required to prove your claim that ducks are cuter than puppies.

We had baby chickens when I was a kid, before they got too big.....I mostly remember they pooped a lot.

Are you planning on getting them young and raising them, or trying for adults?

We had one baby goat born a week ago today. We had twin baby goats born yesterday. Yes, this is off-topic... it's a duck thread, not a goat thread... but the cuteness is overwhelming!

We have two more that should go into labor anytime, now. One is definitely having twins, the other we are not sure yet. I will post a baby goat thread soon

You dare accuse me of trollery!!!
I would say myself and everyone else who came to the thread for cute duck pics are the ones who have been trolled.

I’m open minded and was willing to entertain the possibility that ducks were in fact cuter than puppies but the dissatisfaction I’m feeling from the lack of cute fluffy duck pics in this thread has me firmly on team puppy.

It’s not to late to change my mind, show us all a cute quacker or we will be forced to conclude that you are in fact spreading fake news

When I was really little & my parents still had the farm up here in MI before we moved to FL, we had several varieties of edible feathered grossness. You're right about the ducks being absolutely disgusting slobs that leave a reek to gag a maggot. That smell makes it's memory mark, I tell ya. They're friendly animals, but holy cow, they're gross.

My parents sold a lot of chicken, duck and goose eggs locally, and the goddamn gander was the one to remember out of ALL the feathered animals. I remember my older brother tricking me into collecting the eggs one day and Hitler bit my butt hard, left an extremely tender bad bruise I still remember & wince about today.

And yes, the gander's name really was Hitler, he was aptly named. He was one nasty, mean son of a bitch to every animal or human he crossed paths with from day one.

We ate him for Christmas dinner.

We were duped into adopting that stupid goose. We were assured that it was a goose. Nope. It was a very territorial gander. He bit the crap out of our Fed-Ex driver; beat him with his wings, as well. He nailed me a few times... psycho cobra-chicken. He bit my wife twice. We had to end his reign of terror, when he almost killed one of our best laying hens.

He was brined for three days, then slow smoked. A fitting end, for a truly evil bird.

Well that was an interesting foray into the YouTube rabbit hole.

Tub duckling comes up with (surprise surprise) numerous ducklings swimming in numerous tubs, mildly cute.

Duck with dog mask brings up a bunch of puppies having mango worms removed, the opposite of cute

As for Thumper the love duck, the first result brings up what appears to be furry porn, I feel like I need a bath myself after watching 30 seconds of it.

Your suggestions did not increase the cuteness level I see in ducklings

Ummmm ok. I feel kinda gross, now. Thanks for that.

I hope that your access to farm animals is restricted.

Geese aren't that bad. We raised geese for several years. I actually love the critters. You just have to learn how to show them who's boss. Talk about good watch animals, oh man, they're awesome!

The three white geese were named Huey, Dewy and Louie. (though 2 were females). We had some others but they got eaten by other critters before we could really name them.

We had a feisty gander, and boy was he a character (personality galore). He got real brave one day and decided he was going to attack from behind while I was cleaning out a nest box. I spun around and snatched him up by the neck. He tried the wing-beating thing, but that only made the neck-hold get worse. His little pupils were getting big like he was skeered, and then tiny like he was mad, repeatedly, over and over (he couldn't decide). I picked his flapping ass up and told the wife..."Smoked or roast????". He was the nicest, tamest and most respectful goose you could ever meet after that! He loved the mail lady, and the UPS man, but hated the FedEx guy.

We got them a kiddy pool thinking they'd love that because if there was water somewhere they were in it! At first they wouldn't go in the pool. I put one in there once and she freaked and jumped right back out. They'd sit there staring at it like they wanted to go in, but were afraid. I finally figured it out. I emptied most of the water out so they could touch bottom and, man, you couldn't get those geese out of that pool! Add more water to where they couldn't touch bottom and they'd jump back out. Silly geese didn't know they were geese!!

Unfortunately, we have a whole 'herd' of great horned owls here, and lots of coyotes. Those two are murder on all manner of fowl. We let them out during the day to free range, and once the owls and coyotes figured this out they were goners in short order. They figured out the birds were only out of their pens during the day, so they'd come right in and grab one during daylight if you weren't watching them constantly.

As for ducks, I think ducks are some of the cutest creatures on the planet. I love ducks. I'd love to have some ducks and talk about it often. Sadly though, domestic ducks are some of the most defenseless creatures of all and they wouldn't have much hope of surviving out here unless they were penned 100% of the time, and that's not not fair to an animal.

Ah, but the question is, do ducks taste better with or without their penis'. I read about some nutty guy around 2001 in New Jersey who had a deep love of Duck, I can't remember if he liked it with or without it's joy stick though.

Puppies #1
Goats #2
Kittens #3
Ducks #4.

Sorry, but have had puppies kittens and baby goats. Ducks are cute though.

I agree with this list. It would only be slightly different if we were deciding which ones were bigger assholes, and I think goats would win.... But that's kinda what makes them cute.
