I don't know where you read the FBI recommended CS do the work. You yourself sourced the FBI saying they wanted to do it, and the best practice is for them to do it, but they agreed to the DNC using CS after the DNC told the FBI they were not going to get access.

If a murder happens in my house can I tell the cops they can't come in, I will hire a private investigation company and they can get the evidence from them?

If I can't do that, why not? Why won't you answer that question? Why do we not allow private groups to be hired by people to investigate crimes and then report back to law enforcement?

Still waiting for someone to explain how this would make sense?

They got what they wanted the FBI to have...
How does that help them identify the hackers?

What if the hacker was someone working for them, like say, the Awan brothers? Why would the DNC rather identify them than say, blaming it on Trump/Russia?

Sorry the point is they needed to learn who hacked them.

Nothing in altering data helps that cause therefore what you claim makes no sense.
It doesnt help anyone...

You know what OccamsRazor is right?

When given two sets of variables or competing choices the one requiring the fewest assumptions should be chosen.

The fewest variables would be the choice the DNC is hiding something. We know they prevented the FBI from having access, which is suggestive of them hiding something. You need to invent reasons for them to prevent access, but not be hiding something. So without inventing anything, the question becomes what was being hidden.

Occam's Razor is on my side in this argument, not yours.

So CS tells them who did it, it would harm their poll numbers, they keep it secret.

But you think them telling the FBI they can't have access when the DNC has nothing to hide makes sense ....

Getting desperate with the tactics I see.

Very good.

Now why would the DNC refuse to let the FBI look at the actual hardware ?

Unless .........😱

Applying their own criteria like they did in the Mueller investigation, they would have to agree. Trump merely acted pissed off and they were screaming he's guilty. But they won't. "No FBI you can't look, but here's a copy of our contractor's report". If Trump tried anything even remotely like that they'd be rioting in the streets.

They asked for any reason why the DNC would not want the FBI to know the real hacker, then when given a reason, runs away.

The server itself was not given to the FBI because they would have to turn it off and disconnect it to do so. Interrupting the analysis and security remediation.

I call BS.

I'm not a cybersecurity expert, but that is a ridiculous claim. They could image whatever was in memory before shutting it down, but also - I have moved servers without powering them off. it isn't hard, you just get a few fully charged UPSs, and migrate the server power supplies (all servers have dual power supplies) to one of them, one at a time, then move it.

To do the forensics, you have to remove the drives and remove the controllers from the drives, replacing it with specialist controllers. The forensic 'read' takes days, if not weeks, during which a power down interrupts the process significantly and may produce false results unless resumed exactly from the physical point (in location and timing of the heads), not always an easy task. It is far easier to let the process complete.

"The "images" were 2nd and 3rd hand information 😎🐀"

Really?

Really... or are you seriously suggesting that those images couldn't be tampered with before giving them, to the FBI?

If so, shows how much little you know about data forensics.

Sure, the images can be tampered with, but due to the multiplicity of images and the way they tend to cross verify each other, it is far easier to tamper with the server.

The images of the drives are the evidence and were handed over.

Evidence provided by a firm in the formal employ of the DNC?

Prove they weren't tampered with.

It is my understanding that the server was picked up by FBI agents and taken to CrowdStrike, who were the FBI's external agency for doing the work. The FBI, however did not pay the bills, the DNC did (the DNC had previously had a business relationship with CrowdStrike for mitigation of the consequences of the hack and hardening of network infrastructure security).

But I could be wrong, it seems that everyone had different ideas of what transpired.
