A gun battle between the UN and gunmen in the country of Congo ended up with 50 dead. The militiamen killed were attacking civillians in the area. This resulted in more deaths then in any other attack in the past 5 years. The Congo area in Africa has had several civil wars which has lead to different groups becoming violent.

UN peacekeepers killed as many as 60 militia members in a vicious gun fight in north-eastern Congo, a UN spokesman said Wednesday.

The gunfight took place yesterday in the violent Ituri province, where nine peacekeepers were ambushed and killed by militia members last week

The UN is starting to take care of Congo gunmen finally. The Congo has been a region of civil war and attacks for years. This may be a start of UN being more then a group of politicians, actually trying to help people instead of just pledging to help.

Norwegian media says the UN used attack-helicopters in this attack, and they killed many civilians. Women and children. A UN spokesman said the militiamen used the women and children as human shields.
