Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange has been sentenced to 50 weeks in jail for breaching his bail conditions. The 47-year-old was found guilty of breaching the Bail Act last month after his arrest at the Ecuadorian Embassy.

As Julian Assange arrived at court from Belmarsh High Security prison, photographers got a picture of him defiantly pumping his fist.

Belmarsh Prison

Between 2001 and 2002, Belmarsh Prison was used to detain a number of people indefinitely without charge or trial under the provisions of the Part 4 of the Anti-terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001, leading it to be called the "British version of Guantanamo Bay".[1] The law lords later ruled in A v Secretary of State for the Home Dept that such imprisonment was discriminatory and against the Human Rights Act.[2] It is often used for the detention of prisoners for terrorist related offences. In September 2006 the number of such prisoners was 51.[3]

In November 2009, an inspection report from Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons criticised the "extremely high" amount of force used to control inmates at the prison.[5] The report also stated that an unusually high number of prisoners had reported being intimidated or victimised by staff at Belmarsh.

List of notable inmates include ISIS terrorists and Ian Huntley, psychopathic child killer.

I don’t know about you guys but after a self-imposed imprisonment of seven years, hasn’t the guy suffered enough for a bail offense?
I’m kind of pissed.

Yeah, but it’s been used in other court cases as example of time served.

Also doesn’t excuse him being placed in a prison with terrorists/killers for jumping bail.
Excessive much?

He won't be category A so will be on a different wing.

EDIT: More likely to be in segregation with the nonce's for his own protection.
edit on 1/5/2019 by RexKramerPRT because: (no reason given)

Same prison yard, right? Still feels excessive for a bail issue.

Doubt it. Maybe same yard but likely different times.

Why are you pissed? He skipped bail for 7 years, demonstrating a complete lack of respect to the courts. This gives them no other option other than a custodial sentence. 50 weeks seems pretty reasonable to be honest.

As to rapists, murderers, thieves, etc - what do you expect? Prison's aren't full of surgeons, artists and flower arrangers!

The UK will make his prison cell pretty elite if he teaches some of the governments agents what he knows about acquiring evidence and hacking places. He will be essentially be a teacher for a year. Then, will be allowed to live in the UK without being extradited by other countries.

My guess is this is the plan to remove our eyes. Wait till it comes time for him to be released and he will have conveniently committed a crime that adds to the sentence.

I doubt if JA will last very long in prison. He knows some very dangerous secrets about some very high level politicians.

You simply don't leak state dept. secrets and skate.

He looks like a worm, most likely is one.

No harm done, just twitching a little string.
