the referendum is a gauge of public opinion and not a legally binding vote such as the general election is it not ?

Ideally the government could hold a referendum on any political subject that affects the Uk on a daily basis , if they had the resources to pull it off !

we could have a referendum every week if we wanted to!

Perhaps we could have a TV vote every Saturday hosted by Simon Cowell or Ant or Dec?

it is if the people are the ones demanding another vote ! its our democracy not theirs

Which people.

Sorry The only people I can hear demanding another referendum are the

politicians of all hues.

*The people* are just wanting what they voted for being carried out and soon.

yes exactly , 3 years a lot of things can shift politically ! if the people wanted a referendum after joining the EEC in 78 then a referendum the people should have had !

Lets have a referendum to see if we should have a second referendum on leaving or staying in The EU.

Sounds about as logical as what you are asking for.

Hold on, we should obviously have a referendum on having a referendum to see if we should have a second referendum on leaving or staying in The EU. Obviously, the referendum would only be binding if we ended up voting to have a second referendum.

The people have already voted. They demanded that we leave the EU. Why even bother having another one if you just ignore one that you did not like the result of?

Democracy, indeed. Can we have some, please?

we didnt have one to begin with

" the peoples votes and petitions are like kites in the wind "

if the government for one moment thought that we could affect change by voting , they wouldnt give us a vote !

democracy is an illusion all over the planet earth , its just a lie we have been sold to make us feel that we work and pay for this and have a say !

but its all just set up to filter power and wealth to a select few families

and has been since we have kings and queens

There slogan " Stop Brexit " advocates what the result of a " peoples vote " would be, even before a " peoples vote " would have even been called or the result know if a vote did happen.

So again i ask the question, how do the Liberal Democrats intend to " Stop Brexit " ? Do they use a Crystal Ball ?

Confused from Stratford-upon-Avon.

They want to stop brexit.

The are campaigning for a second vote as probably the only legitimately if doing so.

Not sure how that is confusing.

By your logic there can be a vote to "Stop 'Stop Brexit' "

And another vote to "Stop "Stop 'Stop Brexit" " "...

Something that many posters on here seem not to understand.

A referendum is just a big opinion poll.

Farage made it clear before the referendum that if leave lost he would campaign for another referendum.

DID ! being the operative word possibly !

I disagree I dont think we have a democracy , its all just an illusion
the government do whatever they want every time regardless of the peoples voice !

its the way of the world
we are given tidbits here and there to placate us to keep the illusion alive

but just ask yourself if this was a democracy for the poeple , then where the hell is our wealth ?
where is our welfare !

its currently being stolen by corporate entities who dont pay their way and by politicians who gamble on the UK economy at our expense

if this was a democracy we could force the government to end all that !
if the politicians believed in a democracy they'd have had those corporations pay up long ago !
but they'd rather just see what deal they can strike to line their own pockets and hide it all offshore !

as the upstart crow said, its not what you know or who you know really , but just which dead farm animal you stick your cock in that gets you anywhere in the UK

Oxford dictionary definition

referendum: A general vote by the electorate on a single political question

which has been referred to them for a direct decision.

So a bit more than an opinion poll wouldn't you say?

Yes, but you said we did not have one. If you don't believe we have democracy why do you want a second referendum?

As for your last comment, you have reminded me of Corbyn/Abbott. Damn you!

I am popping into John Lewis later. They have a sale on for referendums.

Ask for two, and you get a third one free.

Not in UK law.

The result was not legally binding but morally and politically it cannot just be ignored. So, a bit more than just an opinion poll. The country was asked to make a choice and it did.

I am not bothered about referendums or anything !

I know they dont really mean anything

I want an end to party politics and an end to this illusion

just need to make sure everyone is wise to the illusion first !

need to use shock tactics .

The sooner we end westminster in its current form the better the people will be !

and what a time to make it happen its nearly the anniversary of the battle of george square and the uprising of workers under John Maclean and the red threat of the Clydeside !
we should take a page from his book and stand together against the corrupt government and profiteers and wealth thieves

it has been ultimately ignored by our government though , because they know full well its just our opinion and not legally binding !
