So they got what looked like basic cell function, but could the pigs still play Mozart? That's what matters.

Hold up, pigs can play Mozart? I would almost not eat them at this point.

And the whole myth about creating a better world through transhumanism by raising everyone to a new intellectual plane and consciousness is hot garbage as well.

Thankfully I'm not that person, I just want to continue my hedonistic lifestyle, either on this planet or on another.

I bet we'll find you on the Hale-Bopp comet.

Well, all joking aside, I think the only reasonable expectation that a single generation can reach another potentially habitable planet to exploit because it has our oil inside it is via transhumanism.

From a different article:

The perfusate also contains chemicals that stop the oxidation (i.e., breakdown) of body tissue, that stop apoptosis (cells bursting after death). It also contains a neural activity blocker

When the brains were dissected and the neural activity blocker was washed away, the researchers found the neurons retained their ability to communicate with one another. That means the cells retained the function they had when the body was alive.

The researchers also used chemicals to block neural activity in the pigs’ brains to try to ensure they never became conscious. But what if the researchers hadn’t done this? They wouldn’t speculate what would happen then. They don’t know if some consciousness could ever be restored after death, and they say they don’t want to try to restore it.
Scientists: We kept pig brains alive 10 hours after death. Bioethicists: “Holy #.”

And if you believe that last sentence: I may have a cathedral in Paris to sell to you...

Proxima Centauri b... If we make it to Mars by the 2030's, we'll be on PCb by the year 2525 or therebouts.

My father had heart attack which resulted in brain death and months long coma before he passed away. There's so many people like him in this very moment that could be brought back from death thanks to similar methods.
Most of the inventions can be used either in good or bad way. Just look at rocketry or fission (that might actually be a bad example due to the nuclear waste).
We live on the edge of exciting times.

Part of that could have been they had drugs in the BrainEx fluid that prevented "brain cell activity." I want to see the results without that stuff in it.

It really was a case of the light's being on but nobody being home as though they were able to get some of the cell's to live again the brain's showed no brainwaves as would be found in a living brain, hence no one was home.
To quote the BBC article there were no signal's from the brain to indicate awareness or consciousness and only some connections within the cadaver brain were restored.

A quick story it inspired.

Captain Thomas Steven's looked at the Lidar rendering of the strange alien craft projected on the cockpit monitor, this far out it would have been almost invisible just a shadow against the star field beyond the oort cloud and even the sun appeared tiny and distant from here.

His ship skimmed along the hull of the vast alien visitor and he looked at the pock mark's some of which looked almost as if they had been melted through it by some kind of energy beam's rather than simply impact craters.

It was vast, at least twice as large as Phobos the moon of mars and though irregularly shaped it was more or less cylindrical, it had been detected by the Prometheus 9 ESA probe over two decades ago and a joint operation between the ESA, NASA and the Chinese space agency's had resulted in the construction of one of the largest non commercial space craft of the late twenty first century, they had given the ship the underwhelming name of the Welcome Child or it translated to something like that from the Chinese whom had been given the honor of naming the ship and despite being larger than the bulk asteroid miners of the Rio Tinto space core it was but a speck beside the ancient and presumably alien behemoth that had taken almost eight years to reach.

Older mission's had identified a location that appeared to be a docking port and as the Welcome Child came up to the location it's retro rocket's kicked in slowing it's velocity even further, causing the crew to experience the sudden discomfort of a gravitation like environment for a few second's before the ship slowed and gently touched down on the surface of Echo as they had come to call the ancient derelict.

Doctor's Zhang, Bernard and Cruise led the first ever - official and recorded - human mission into an alien environment but what they found was beyond shocking.

The ship was NOT alien, there were cadavers flash frozen floating in the corridor's and it would seem the ancient craft had once rotated to simulate gravity but somehow had stopped that rotation long ago now spinning slowly end on end taking several day's to make one rotation around it's center of mass.

Those Cadavers were more than a little too human to be alien's and an autopsy on one of the deceased ancient crew members showed that this was in fact an accurate observation, the people back home of course could never learn this or indeed that the mission was anything other than an experimental long duration manned mission to visit an anomalous body orbiting in the outer regions of the solar system.

But the greatest shock was yet to be found, as they explored more and more of the ancient battered wreck studying the technology's that in some cases were far more primitive and in others more advanced as well as many item's that served no known function the scientists came across a chamber in the heart of the ship, a chamber with a number of cryogenic containers and though there power source had long since died the cold of this region of space was enough to have kept there content's preserved perfectly.

And that content's was people, they were not exactly like the human's of this epoch, they differed in many way's but were still recognizable as people and if they walked down the street in contemporary dress you would not look twice though you may comment on them being very tall and slender or there larger head's, larger pale blue (almost white) eye's or slightly smaller and slightly pointed ears or there more sparse almost colorless hair which was almost translucent but otherwise you would be forgiven for thinking that they were merely people with some kind of medical condition.

It was only when they broke the code on the ancient alien writing that was all over the inside of the ship, written on the wall's, scratched into the bulk head's and even into the door's by the ancient crew whom knew that they were doomed and that there world was but wanted to leave both a message and a warning in case anyone in the distant future ever found there ship.

There ship the Echo whatever it's real name had been the first ship of there age ever designed to visit another star system, a multi generational mission that had taken them to a star over nine light years away taking hundreds of years to get there and hundreds to get back but to survive this mission they had developed cryogenic suspension already used by there culture for hundreds of years to treat various diseases back on mars - a shock that opened up a whole can of worm's for the scientists to find that the ancestors of humanity had actually come from mars but that is another story.

So there best scientists had been frozen using special chemical's to prevent ice crystal damage to there cell's and special magnetic shield's to limit radiation exposure to them over time as there cell's would experience the background radiation at an accelerated rate due to there dormancy.

When they got to the star system they had found a dead world with traces of a long dead civilization and the caretaker crew had woken some of the scientists whom had been placed in cryogenic suspension at the time there ancestors' had once boarded the multi generational vessel but those scientists had not been themselves for you see there soul's had been displaced by the long death of there body's and now the mad deranged dead of a destroyed alien world fought to occupy them as demonic alien manifestation's and paranormal horror had overtaken the ancient ship, the caretaker crew had been forced to abandon or destroy the awakened abomination's that these former scientists had become and then they had turned there ship around as quickly as it's vast bulk could be turned and headed home.

But the dead race and soul's of a long dead alien world could move far faster across the stars than them and now knowing of a world with people upon it that they could infect with there presence they had stretched across the space between the stars and invaded mars, in a last ditch attempt to drive off the horror that had befallen them the martian's had destroyed there own world leaving just a few survivors to flee to an outpost on the unwelcoming toxic high gravity world that would one day be called earth.

When the ship had finally reached home it had found it's home world a dead and barren place, the crew after deliberation had made a choice since they knew they were going to die to place there ship in a tombstone kind of orbit were it might survive long enough to be discovered if another race ever arose since there were still two living world's the dying second world that was even then too hot for ordinary life but still sustained some extreme high temperature resistant life form's at that time and the third world a place of wild geological activity and swarming with pathogenic life - and unknown to the crew a struggling colony of there own people whom were trying to adapt to the unforgiving world.

I thought what actually mattered is if they could continue to produce bacon.

Now they are down to head cheese...

I was also thinking that maybe they could take the good bits and tweak it To come up with an Alzheimer's Combatant.

This made me think even more so that a person being beheaded by knife will have some level of conciousness until the spinal cord is sawed through and severed, or as it's being severed if done quickly enough.

The last sounds a captive heard was Allahu Akbar and Islamic chants while their head is held in place.
