A 7.2 Earthquake struck eastern Indonesia late Wednesday. There are no reports of tsunami as of yet. No aftershocks have been reported yet. However, considering the size of this quake, aftershocks should be considered a hazard. This is breaking news. I'm sure more news will be forthcoming.

TOKYO - A powerful earthquake struck eastern Indonesia late Wednesday, meteorological agencies said, and was felt as far off as Australia. There were no immediate reports of damage.

The 7.2 magnitude quake, which did not trigger a tsunami, struck at 1042 GMT and was centered about 200 miles southeast of Ambon in the Banda Sea, Japan's Meteorological Agency said.

It was not immediately clear if residents in Ambon, the capital of Maluku province, felt the quake, which struck 117 miles under the seabed. But residents in Australia's northern city of Darwin said they could feel their houses shaking.

Japan's Meteorological Agency said last month it would start issuing bulletins on earthquakes powerful enough to trigger tsunamis - meaning those measuring magnitude 7 and above - even when they occur far from Japan.

This is the tsunami alert center. It states that there are no tsunami yet however, it verifies the earthquake.

I found it interesting that Arizona also had an earthquake this morning. It was rather sizable for the area.

This seems to be a copy of the Darwin Earthquake report, which also occurred in the Banda Sea. Innocent mistake though, due to the focus on a different affected region in the other article.

When these big earthquakes happen out at and under the sea, if there was a big tsunami, would we be able to see it with all our satellites up there? Some of these spy jobs can read a newpaper so surely a big wave could be spotted very easily and the people warned etc.

This is an interesting point. Last time there was a pretty big one south of Australia, then a really big one further North. That may not hold true this time, but if it is coming my money is on the Nicobar Islands or somewhere off the coast of India. They've been getting a pretty good share of 4s and 5s.
Aren't there sites which claim to predict quakes?

The oldest post is supposed to remain, but with the new submission system things could be different. Back when things were approved, the oldest stayed because it couldn't be the newest unless it had already met the standards of ATSNN.
With the submission system, if the older post doesn't meet ATSNN requirements, it can be argued that older one wouldn't deserve to stay, because under the old system it never would have been allowed up and therefore wouldn't have been the oldest. See what I'm saying?

In theory, the oldest post which meets all requirements is the one that should stay.
