www.espn.com...

After eight weeks of games and less than one season into its existence, the Alliance of American Football is suspending operations, a source told ESPN on Tuesday, confirming multiple reports.

The league had been struggling from the outset. After the first week of the season, Tom Dundon -- owner of the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes -- pledged a $250 million investment and essentially became the AAF's owner.

In my opinion, this should give Vince McMahon a major pause in his idea to restart the XFL. It's simply not going to work... I think we saw the second golden age of American football in the 2000's and we're now seeing the sport heading towards a valley. It seems like the NFL wasn't losing football fans the past few years, football overall was losing fans. I suppose the issues with the head injuries, rule changes, primadonna and arrogant characters, plus the drift away from corded cable TV towards streaming are all at play here, but the AAF was offering good, enjoyable football and it still fell flat on it's face. That doesn't bode well for the XFL down the road.

I've been excited for the xfl since i heard about is reboot, not because of their games, but how it made the nfl better to watch.

I think it may be able to give the nfl a spike that it needs.

Examples:
Skycams
Endzone celebration cameras

Ebersol and Polian have reputations for being good organizers etc
can't believe they couldn't make it through one year. what the heck kind of operation were they running?
underfunding is the bane of pro leagues. there was a spring league a few years ago that never played a game.

they should have known better.

tv money, tv money and tv money. they were on NFLN and CBSSN. if that wasn't enough $ they should have plan B'd.

stadium attendance varied from 29k (San Antonio) to under 10 (Memphis, I think) but that's minor money in sports these day.

really surprised at those guys.

No, child. A manly sport is hockey. American football is just gay grab-ass pron on grass.

This is where someone posts the meme of the bleeding hockey player skating back into play versus the sissy mary soccer player writhing around on the ground cause the fairy got a wet willy.

Oh, screw it, I'll do it:

NFL has $13.68 billion revenue, what would a "world sport" have in revenue?

Add up all the " Association Football " revenues on the enclosed. It comes way over that amount.

I can't be arsed to do it.

en.wikipedia.org...

Association Football, Cricket, Rugby all have a " World Cup " Tournament. Where is the one for American Football?

Oh, there isn't one.

Soccer - the ultimate participation trophy sport where grown men spend way to long chasing around one ball and still can't be bothered to decide who wins and end the game in a tie.

American Football watched by 400 million fans

Association Football watched by 3.5 BILLION fans.

Even Cricket has 2.5 billion fans.

Says it all really.

Yes? And McDonald's has sold billions and billions of hamburgers all around the world, but that doesn't mean those burgers are actually any good for you, only that people like them.

So none of their leagues are even half of the NFL.

To be fair I would be a fan of Soccer if they did not flop so much, they need to seriously stop that, it makes it unwatchable.

To be fair, considering all the NFL teams are American, that means there's just under 100 million people who enjoy it so much, they don't even have a stake in it or a home team, they just watch it for the enjoyment, whereas a lot of countries have a national soccer team they can support.

Either way both of them are just watching a bunch of dudes running around playing with balls anyway.

The fact that the rest of the world sucks at something America has dialed into a science hasn't stopped the rest of the world from trying it... I mean, the USA is back to back World War Champions, undefeated, but still the rest of the world tries to participate by fielding pitiful militaries. Why should football be any different?

Says too many in the world seem to enjoy watching men play with their balls...
Me? I'm a fishing man, myself. That and hunting are men's sports.

Oh, and yeah, I put this in the wrong forum, I suppose... not really sure why we have a US and then a World sport forum instead of just a "SPORTS" forum, but I am fairly sure if one tracked the history of the split they'd find some European member pissing and whining about how their continent doesn't follow baseball or football, lacks the toughness to follow hockey, and are too short to appreciate basketball, thus calling/crying for a "World Sports" forum.

Eh, a sport is a sport. They all have their particular skill sets and physical needs.

qoach.co...

www.msn.com...=21

www.espn.com...

According to list after list, hockey, soccer, and football are all tough sports, but the top sport always goes to boxing, hands down.
