Make America Great, was a campaign slogan used by Reagan.

Make America Great Again, is a reference to that.

Not to some utopian moment in American history.

That being said, I think the eighty's were the pinnacle of the United States' "greatness".

Perhaps because America has been a pretty ugly place for a lot of people for a really long time.

Not an excuse to run guns, next.

The systematic oppression of anyone who wasn't a white male for nearly two centuries just doesn't seem to compute with you all?

100s of thousands of white males died next to Black Americans (no i will not call myself African American , Im an American) to guarantee they were free, and even more namely the republican party and its voters, voted and pushed to give them freedom.

We had to fight a whole war with ourselves to try and free black people. Even then, we did everything in our power to prevent them from succeeding. Meanwhile, Natives continued to be raped and slaughtered in the name of Manifest Destiny.

And what ? we still got it done, im black, and we even had a black President and many states all over the nation have a black representative.

We can be proud of our achievements (we put a person on the friggin moon!) but we shouldn't pretend that America has always or was ever 'great' while it continued abhorrent practices of race, sexual and class discrimination.

IT has and IS great, it has been the nation that has lead the way , despite its history, in freedom and equality, while other nations fell behind.

Please PLEASE tell me as a black man how horrible the us is and what a racist nation we are , and how great we arent.

The only people responsible of being held back by their color are my own brothers and sisters that buy into the bullsn#.

I love our country, I love my people, but the last thing I need as a black man is another person of a different color telling me how oppressed I should or need to be.

So please get off it, its insulting. And that BS is just as racist and demeaning as anything else.

Sounds great except the part where you make it out that the civil war was started over slavery. It wasn't, in fact, Lincoln didn't add that until later during the war. He was even for slavery as punishment. The Thirteenth Amendment wasn't added until 1865. Lincoln's decision to fight rather than to let the Southern states secede was not based on his feelings towards slavery.

Many times. But in 1945 for sure when they set the world free of Nazism and the Japanese invasions. Since then...not so much.

Complete and utter Bullshhiitt.
Wake up and smell the coffee.
I'll tell you what, in respect to you as an ATS Member,
I will put in some historical effort here,
I owe it to this site, and I will ask forgiveness in
advance from you and anyone else for being crass....

We did not exactly fight a war with "ourselves".
The South wanted to secede from the Union and align
with the British and other Foreign entities. (Bankers).
The continuation of plantation worker slavery was
one of the goals as well.

As mentioned, the Union fought against secession, and
slavery instigated by the British/Europeans/Jewish Bankers.
Most of the Union Casualties were White People.
Hello? Comprende? Capisce?
There , I said it. Are you happy now? But that was a long,
long, time ago. Does that make all Whites,Jews,British,
Europeans,Blacks that fought with the union, or South, etc. Bad?
Of course not! So quit the public school
hasty generalizations labels and start looking forward instead of
backwards.

If America is still an ugly place to you,
I would gather that you have not been smart, lucky,
or industrious
enough to enjoy the Rich Privilege.
By the way, they do not discriminate on skin color.

200 years of white privilege. Sounds like a jealous excuse to me.
Don't buy into the Marxist divisionary brainwash.

The Sultans,The Pharaohs,The Emperors of China and The East,
The Incas, the Mayas, The Kings and Queens of Africa,
All had privilege and they were not white.

You seem not to realize that many of the "White" immigrants
who traveled to North America were in effect slaves themselves.
But the Miracle was that The Sons of Liberty strove to create
a Unified Country where ALL People are Free and Equal.
The belief was that all people would achieve the pinnacle
of their existence through their own God Given Talents.
I believe and live by these humble and Noble ideas.

But then , the Greedheads came along.
They always do, and they always will.
For instance, or example, it may be The Chinese
for the next 200 years.

So will your argument be Chinese Privilege then?

It is not about skin color,
it is about Wealth,Power, and most importantly CONTROL.
The best control is division.
While you are fighting among yourselves,LGBT,BLACK,WHITE,LATINO,WHATEVER.
I laugh my way to the bank.

Be wise, Be thankful for every meal.
Be thankful for what you are able to love.

Men were still in bondage.

Bill of Rights only applied to certain men.

Yea.. A civil war that killed thousands of Americans and still didn't end black oppression. Granted, sure it helped fight against slavery. That is great, but still doesn't make the country GREAT.

Sure, economic and political superiority is great. Yet, is that great if the goods of the mind suffer. We still severely lacked in ethical reforms. China is doing great economically. Should we be like them now?

So now im for the impossible utopian communism fantasy because I dear question the foundations of America? … How many founders of America owned slaves? While the founders certainly had wisdom, it's idiocy to hold them on an infallible pedestal as so many do.

Not sure if you noticed, but the first sentence I said was "America has had great moments". My point was that America has not had some utopian time in history when all was perfect.

In fact, this is probably the best time for all people. I don't hate America, but that doesn't mean I throw on my MAGA hat and forget to question the world.

Not sure what your point was, because I immediately said that America has had great moments. And all you listed was instances of great moments.

Tell me, what is this sense of "great" that MAGA will bring back.

Maybe it is. However, I doubt the mass public perceives it that way. People often have a tendency to create nostalgia of a time that never was.

When saving the ungrateful world...1918, 1945.... after that, not so much

Someone needs to read up on the History of both World Wars. Russia did more and lost more than anyone in the defeat of Nazi Germany in WW2, and by the time the US had landed in France (1918) Germany was all but done. Not saying you Yanks never played your part, but to claim you single-handedly save the world, is, in the words of General Tony McAuliffe...NUTS!

I'll let Crowder reply to it, I don't have time to break it down.

Anyways, 'great' is a word that can be debated. 'Great' means different things to different people. For those people with a chip on their shoulder, or look for some time in America's past that rubs them wrong, America was never great. That's shallow and nitpicking, in my opinion.

America has never been perfect. Our founding documents admit as much, they were written with the idea that as a country we are working towards 'a perfect Union.' The Federalist Papers admit we are flawed, they say that if men were angels we would not need to be governed.

That said, to me America is great. I can't think of any other country at any time in human history that I would trade up for.

What I don't understand from the esteemed Mr. Holder is, if he thinks the USA is so bad... why is he still here? Actions speak louder than words. No one is stopping him from going to a country that more closely matches his idea of 'greatness.'

It is a legitimate question. I see people pointing out things like the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and WWII.

So we need a war that sacrifices a large percentage of our youth to be great?

Others have pointed out the time when the US became a superpower, which was primarily due to the fact the rest of the world was a bombed out crater.

And yet others have claimed the Reagan years were the pinnacle of America's greatness. The same period of time that essentially led to the slow death of the middle class.

And this is before we even start discussing the systemic discrimination that has always been present.

So please, someone, point me to a period of time in America's history where everything was great.

The one thing the US has done, still does and will continue to do is keep trying to make itself better. One of the founding principles is to aim high. It is almost comparable to a person who is a perfectionist. Nothing is ever good enough so we kep trying to make it better.

I think the speech given in the video I linked is pretty spot on.

No doubt America has had great moments, but MAGA can imply that America was great at one point. As if the key to our salvation as a country lies in the nostalgia for a time that never was.

Although, Make America Great (mag) isn't really catchy..

People take the MAGA thing to seriously anyway. No harm in asking philosophical questions as to what makes a country great. Can a country ever attain greatness and how?

Not a comment towards holder, but just the topic in general.

So America wasn't great when we fought a war to release ourselves from bondage to England.

America wasn't great when we wrote a Constitution and Bill of Rights to ensure that all men were equal.

America wasn't great when we took the time to fight a civil war to release the slaves from Democrats.

America wasn't great at all when we became the dominant economic and political force on the planet.

America wasn't great when we made so many industrial and technological advances that we became the leader of the free world.

To you, America isn't great because it hasn't bowed down to the forces of a tyrannical government and slid headfirst into socialism.

We're half way there and are teetering on the brink of it.

So YES.. let's make America Great again.

By keeping it rooted in the ideology that started it all, instead of throwing it all away for a Utopian fantasy.

That's what MAGA means, not that you'll understand it.

Excellent thoughts, but don’t expect to sway the ranks of the diehard haters.

I see sanders clips and I cringe. His platform is, literally, we must destroy Trump.
Oh, and destroy the Constitution while we’re at it.

These slobbering, materialistic apes are terminally numb,
burnt out on coke. They wouldn’t feel
a stick of dynamite if it exploded up their collective ass.
