If he has geese in his trees, then he is well beyond any levels of helpful suggestions folks on this forum can provide him and he's on his own!

Do you have to protect your roses from the cold? If not, you should be fine with pyracantha, at most it might inhibit it a bit, which isn't a bad thing, it is a beast. Also Berberis, almost as vicious as pyracantha but more numerous in varieties so there is likely a few hardier ones. They're both evergreens too.
