Lincoln, a 3 year old Nubian Goat will be the small town of Fair Haven Vermont's first animal mayor. This year they decided to elect a non human mayor and Lincoln the goat won with 13 votes, beating out 15 other (and various) animals. Coming in second was Sammie the dog with 11 votes.
One of Lincoln's official duties as Mayor will be to march in the local Memorial Day Parade wearing a custom made sash.

If you take away the political maneuvering and gladhanding how different are Lincoln's duties from those of most major cities?

One could only hope now that Lincoln can go on to Congress so Vermont could have a smarter Congressman then they currently have.

Speaking as a New Yorker I can honestly say I don't believe there is a politician here who I would choose over a goat.

I concede to your post and I'm sorry you are not represented there.

Hopefully PETA can start endorsing some candidates, they can come from pet shelters and it will be a win/win for everyone!

Still though... no one rocks the sash quite the way a goat does.

We have a miniature alpine goat... and we live in a miniature alpine town.

Perhaps she has a chance...

Until they eat it...

My Nubians are great recyclers if you are not careful.

We had one eat a beer can left by a crappy visitor and had to get her surgery.

I still like what they are doing in Fair Haven though... just picking the most qualified candidate for the job.

But the goat's more useful than you are...

With less leg hair.

You would be more credible if that "1/1024th banjo player" got you into an ivy league school.

Weve been electing Jack Asses since shortly after 1776 so, makes sense...

Mayor Ass has a nice ring to it.

Not quite the level of "the honorable Jack Ass", but still good.

Government and politics

Fair Haven operates under a council–manager government with a town manager and a five-member Selectboard to supervise the local government. It has an annual operating budget of $2.9 million and 29 employees. The town lacks a mayor, but has a ceremonial mayoral election that is open to pets and animals with a paid submission to raise funds for the local elementary school. In a sixteen-candidate ballot in March 2019, a Nubian goat named Lincoln was elected as mayor to a one-year term.
Fair Haven, Vermont

I've lived in towns that didn't have mayors. If a goat for mayor raises money for elementary school I'm all for it. Beats having 6 & 7 year olds washing cars.
