Most legitimate charities are saying STOP donating for now.

Americans have given 1 billion so far. Other countries have given
an additional 3 billion. No plans have been brought forth to show
how this money will be used. No balance sheets have been shown
by the charities to show exactly how much of this money will really
go to the Tsunami areas and how much will be DIVERTED into other
areas. I found it disturbing when I read that people could donate
to legitimate charities fully believing their money would be designated
to go to the tsunami victims, but those charities have reserved the
right to divert the funds to other things. True ... the charities will
PROBABLY use the money for good works and it is still money
that was donated well ... but ....

Tsunami Charities: Enough Already

Aid groups raising cash for South Asia's tsunami victims have collected
so much in donations that many have stopped actively soliciting tsunami
contributions.

In the two months since the disaster, U.S. tsunami donations alone have
topped $1 billion in relief, according to the Wall Street Journal - which
cited estimates from the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University
in Indianapolis.

"The outpouring of donations was so strong that many organizations,
including World Vision, CARE USA, Oxfam America and the American Red
Cross, have stopped actively soliciting new donations for the crisis," the
paper said.

Excerpt that I find disturbing - WHY is the UN still collecting money?
What is the plan for this? (we have seen none) Who is in charge
of the money? Can they be trusted? (can ANYONE at the UN be
trusted with money?) and then there is that part about 'REDIRECTING
donations' ....

Still, with ex-presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush traveling the
world asking for more tsunami cash, and U.N. Secretary General Kofi
Annan still passing the hat, the money keeps rolling in.

Most charities reserve the right to redirect the funds to other needs as
they see fit, a provision that raised eyebrows during 9/11 fundraising
efforts.

I think all money sent to the big wave is a waste.........it is a scam for the local crimminals..........just like in Florida after the last set of hurricanes that ripped off FEMA.

Not one penny to the big wave

The point is the world sticks its hand out to take american money, it's time to cut it off. No one penny should leave the US for this or any other 'disaster".

Gosh, I know its ridiculous. We have went overboard with the charity thing its not even about charity or helping people... its about politics and image. Everyone gets on the Hollywood bandwagon. It will definately be great to see what they do with all that of money. My guess is nothing. Those people will still be in shacks.

Yup. We do it too much. It needs to stop.

Question: Why were we sending people to help when India has over a billion people?

For once I agree with FlyersFan. I created a thread on this and got hardly any love. I certainly don't think it's inhumane to say this at all. I've heard people say on TV that they have more than enough money, but not enough volunteers. There's something else going on here. I believe that a portion of this money is being used for something else, something the public is not aware of. Bush and Clinton are always in my face asking for money. I'm tired of it. Go ahead and laugh at me and ridicule all you want, but I think there is a conspiracy of epic proportions regarding this tsunami. I believe it was made to happen. Why, well I'm still trying to figure it out.

Peace

NO your changein the subject.
Firstly the "world" is giveing them money, hell the scottish public alone (thats with no gov sponsering) has reached 20 million. From a country with 5 million people thats great.
Dont call yourselfs the sole protectors of the world, we stand up there with you.

I semi-agree, ok, mostly agree.

Without direction, and a plan, this Tidal Wave, of money, will probably
be "administered" until it is gone.

I donated a few times, and I still feel good about it. But:

I would really appreciate if someone could direct me to a place, that shows the good, that is becoming of it. I may even donate again.

Does anyone wonder why Bush and Clinton are the face of this? Are they just good guys? If they'd have just cared a fraction of this about Rwanda maybe hundreds of thousands could have been spared the horror of having their domes lopped off by whackos with machetes. Something really stinks about this!
I don't believe for one minute that there couldn't have been a better warning and more lives couldn't have been saved. I bet that's not really an early warning system that they're going to use the money for.

Peace

EXACTLY! Legally the charities can 'divert donations' to other things.
Even the legit charities are saying that they have enough money.
So WHY are Bush 41 and Clinton on TV asking for more? And most
of all ... WHERE is the plan? Someone show me a plan for the 4 billion
dollars that has been promised/donated. It best not be for rebuilding
Hilton hotels .. that's why those business' have insurance. My donation
money had best not be spent on that. What are the governments
involved spending this $$ on? The survivors? An early warning system?
WHAT?!? Someone wanna' give us a balance sheet on what the
4 billion is going to? How much was 'diverted' by the charities?
(which they have a legal right to do so ... but I don't like it!)
Why is it taking 4 billion dollars to rebuild in a poor area of the world
to begin with? Like I said ... the hotels and business' on the water
(like Hilton etc.) have insurance and charity money shouldn't be going
to them. So ... balance sheet please!!

There were reports in the first month about terrorists setting
up road blocks and shaking down the relief workers. The
terrorists would steal the food and money and medicines
that were donated and then send them to their terrorist
camps.

I didn't read any reports, but there is no telling how much
food and medicine was skimmed off the top and sold in the
black market over there.

The first month or so was a mess. I don't know how it is now.
