"Washington (AFP) - The number of undocumented immigrants stopped at the US border with Mexico soared to more than 76,000 in February, the highest monthly level in years, US Customs and Border Protection said Tuesday.

The number of families and unaccompanied children also rose to nearly two-thirds of the total, often crossing in large groups and turning themselves in to authorities to request asylum, blunting the Trump administration's tactics aimed at curbing the flow.

At 76,103, the number of people stopped at the border or detained after crossing was up sharply from the roughly 61,000 average for the previous three months, a surprising surge for what is usually a downturn in the coldest month of the year."

76,000 is who they apprehended imagine how many slipped through? This is an invasion plain and simple and is damn sure an emergency regardless of what our open border leftists ATS crowd says. Thats almost 1,000,000/year and they cant all be good people that's for damn sure.

Tell me, when does it become an emergency? at 100K, 500K, 1M?

Your title is misleading, as these people are considered 'legal' asylum seekers.

The number is derived from people who crossed and then turned themselves into border agents and then claimed asylum.

I was hearing recently that the majority of the figured in your are from Guatemala and have come here cause the coffee market has taken a big hit and they have no jobs down there. They learned that through legal loopholes in the law they can travel here with a child and only be held a couple weeks.

It is our laws and their lack of jobs that is responsible for this influx.

The solution is to just give them 2 year work visa's if they drop their asylum claims. Let them make some bank and then go home. They are not really interested in spending their whole life here from what i can tell.

Once they are allowed to come and work for a spell they will not be bringing a child along to use loopholes in the law.

Sorry but asylum is not for because you're broke and where you live has crime.

ALL asylum "applicants should be waiting for their case to be heard across the border ... NOT here in the US.

An illegal immigrant will cross the border, find the nearest border patrol and beg to be caught using the now popular phrase, "Asylum". Those caught in the country seeking asylum cannot be immediately expelled, by law, and MUST be granted a hearing. This allows them to bypass those seeking legal immigration and go to the head of the line. This is not fair to those seeking to enter the country and obey our immigration laws as it pushes their court date further and further back. Many of those detained are released into the United States as they await their court case.

Many are fleeing politically motivated violence and that translates to political persecution, which makes them legal asylum seekers.

Some immigration-rights advocates explain this uptick by pointing at world events—environmental devastation, gang activity and political volatility in much of Central America. They say that the U.S., a nation founded by religious refugees, is built on a proud tradition of sheltering those facing persecution and that we should make room for as many as we can, whatever the source of their fear.

All the factories in Mexico are closing. This is because the Chinese have pegged the Yuan to the dollar at 6 to 1. This means a CEO gets 6 Chinese workers for every one American worker (maybe 4 to 1 with cost of shipping). I'm not sure what the numbers are for Mexican workers. But since everything in the World is now being produced in China where are the Mexican displaced workers going to go?

If we want to reduce illegal immigration in this country we need public or foreign policies taking away the reasons for Mexicans to come here in the first place.

DHS Secretary just testified in Congress that 90% of "Asylum" seekers never show up for court hearings.

Democrats love this chaos 😎

Cloward-Piven tactics.

When foreign people ignore your borders and come into the country to take, it is called an invasion.

It is an invasion.

Yea that is backwards according to the DOJ Executive Office for Immigration Review and recent news.

They come here to steal our jobs and send the money made back to Mexico. Most of them do nothing to help our country and instead harm it tremendously. They're called economic migrants and the only thing that will stop them is a border wall. I guess we could also go with the Dems plan and destroy our economy to stop the rampant illegal immigration.

Fail

These people are not from mexico

The only thing a complete wall would do is drive them all to texas where they would cross the river and then turn themselves in and then just continue to use the loopholes just as they are now.

BUy Guatemalan coffee and not from far across the seas. That would help a lot from what i have heard.

It only stands to reason that they had to hire another 12 immigration judges for a reason.

To quote your own quote (and prove you wrong):

"Some immigration-rights advocates explain this uptick by pointing at world events—environmental devastation, gang activity and political volatility in much of Central America."

No Central American in this situation can legally seek asylum in the US.

Even if they are," fleeing politically motivated violence and that translates to political persecution, which makes them legal asylum seekers", they are not allowed to seek asylum in the US.

Anyone can seek asylum. Being granted asylum is what you describe. It is up to judges.

From what i gather the gang ms13 is the reason many of them are granted asylum cause they are big time down there in coffee country.

Lol, the opinion of the Human Rights Watch does not supersede international law.

Since you're failing to recognize my point, international law sates asylum seekers register their asylum claim in the first country they arrive in. Since these CENTRAL AMERICANS are detained trying to enter FROM MEXICO, the US is obviously not the first country they arrived in after fleeing their own country. This makes them unable to seek asylum in the US.

Sorry, but you are still wrong.
