Michael Avenatti arrested for alleged $20 million extortion attempt against Nike

The charges were revealed less than an hour after Avenatti announced a press conference to discuss purported claims against Nike. An FBI agent said in the complaint in New York that the lawyer had threatened to hold a press conference on the eve of Nike's quarterly earnings call to announced "allegations of misconduct by employees of Nike."

A criminal complaint filed in New York against Avenatti says he "devised a scheme to extort a company by means of an interstate communication by threatening to damage the company's reputation if the company did not agree to make multi-million dollar payments to Avenatti and [co-conspirator], and further agree to pay an additional $1.5 million to a client of Avenatti's."

It’s an unusual arrangement, and one that fall short of demands from the right that Sessions name a second special counsel. That idea has generated controversy, with critics saying the second appointee would inevitably impede the work of special counsel Robert Mueller......
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) have all called for a second special counsel to investigate a variety of different conservative allegations related to the Obama-era Justice Department.

Avenetti may be going down, but it seems like Nike is in trouble as well, if what CPL has to say is actually true. Seems they have been paying top high school athletes and their families tons of money to go to a school that Nike reps. Adidas already got busted for this very same thing, and I highly doubt they are the only company to do this type of thing. Nike should still be very worried, IMO.

Regardless of what Nike may have done, what CPL had planned was illegal stock market manipulation. How much you want to bet he short-sold Nike's stock, planning to make bunch of money after the stock price crashed following his announcement?
