Well for one, China is not bound by Kyoto and neither is India. That is the primary reason alot of people are against this treaty.
Secondly, it's not unknown for developing countries to leapfrog in certain areas, check out this link...

Can it be possible that for the following reasons, China will be more likily to embrace renewable energy then the US;
1) China does not have corporations that can override the interests of the government, if the government says it will, then it will.
2) The costs of maintaining and precurring gas and oil from volatile areas is a touch and go thing, especially if war breaks out.
3) The ongoing pollution problem is now be touted to the leadership by an influential lobby of minister's sons etc
4) The environment might be one issue in which China can gain leverage over the US on the world stage, especially since Kyoto.
