Simple. Being feared makes people want you to go away. Being respected makes people hope you never leave.
But if there's no way you'll ever get people to respect you...then by all means, make them be afraid of you. It's certainly a lot easier, after all anybody can be mean...but inspiring respect is beyond some people's skill set.

If your feared others will always try and bring you down.

In a work place that can lead to all kinds of problems in efficiency.

If your respected others try and do what you want them to even before you ask.

In a business setting it's better to be respected.

Perhaps you should try your hand at being a gangster where it is much better to be feared.

Respected.

That's what I have learned in my profession. When respected, people will usually genuinely want to do what is asked of them, or do what they can to please. When feared, people will begrudgingly do things only because of fear of repercussion.

Being respected is a sign of strength; being feared is a sign of weakness.

In the long run fear is a tool best used in sparingly and against those who, because of their own limitations, other tools of motivation do not work.

Fear as a motivator will work in the short term. In the long term it will be the end of those who use it as their primary motivator. Nobody is feared forever....nobody. However, you can be respected forever.

Those who use fear as their primary motivator of others are too weak, stupid, ignorant, or have a character flaw that causes them to crave being feared to realize other methods are far more effective and produce better results. Basically they are bullies.

Is fear a tool in the toolbox? Yes. Should it be the default one you reach for? No....

Everyone with an ounce of sense fears the wrath of a patient man. Everyone with an ounce of sense plots to end the reign of a bully..

Respected!!

Because someone has to earn respect first. Fear is induced, respect is earned.

The first one is outgoing, forcing, short lived. The other one is incoming, payback for your actions in the long term.

To the OP:
Are you fearing your own position?
