Monkees bass player has passed away age 77

The Monkees where Americ'a answer to The Beatles, but in reality there was no similarity.

The first manufactured band, they weren't allowed to play their instruments on the early recordings, however that changed later on in their career.

They made a few good songs including " The Porpoise " song which i did enjoy.

The Monkee's movie "Head", produced by Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson shortly after they appeared in the movie "Easy Rider", was an eye opener for me. I thought of that movie as deconstructing the Monkees from the prefab four into something else, possibly a glimpse of how the group really was or wanted to be seen.

The Monkees TV show was developed as a kid's comedy, however, John Lennon who was a fan thought of them as the Marx brothers of music, I tend to agree with that assessment. Jimi Hendrix actually played on tour with them and they were also friends with Frank Zappa. Actors yes, but actually musicians too. I thought that the music they played and produced under their own label was better than the music written for them by other song writers like Neil Diamond.

They had tried to break out of the box with that movie, it didn't work though it seems.

The film featured Victor Mature as "The Big Victor" and cameo appearances by Nicholson, Teri Garr, Carol Doda, Annette Funicello, Frank Zappa, Sonny Liston, Timothy Carey, Percy Helton and Ray Nitschke. Also appearing on screen in brief non-speaking parts are Dennis Hopper and film choreographer Toni Basil.

My Mum always complained that they weren't a "real band" when I watched the reruns as a kid. I still don't care.

Peter Tork was a sweetie.

Saw them in concert as a teen in Detroit.(what'd I know at 13?!).....most of their music was written and recorded by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart (as a group on tour w the Monkees after replacing JImi Hendrix, sometimes known as the Candy Shoppe Prophets). I remained in touch with Bobby Hart and his wife up to the MySpace days...then lost touch Bobby's wife...

Peter was the only "multi-instrumentalist" folk singer already, when hired for the band.

Damn, Peter! R.I.P.....God bless you and thanks
