60% percent of employment comes from small businesses. When they are taxed out of existence, where does anyone's pay check come from? The Government? The Government that takes money outta the folks that actually work?

I put this thread in the mud-pit for a reason. I plan on bumping this thread every few days to highlight the failure of your liberal ideals...

I'm a minority owned business. What's your next excuse for fleecing you fellow tax payer?

There is literally no way around it. You cannot raise minimum wage to a ridiculous amount (whatever is deemed "livable") and to expect a positive outcome. Capitalism does not work that way and it NEVER will. Socialism does not work well either. In the end, within a capitalist world, people need to suffer. There must be sacrifices for those who work hard to get to where they are today. That is the way the system works. I don't agree with it either, but this whole "livable wage" crap needs to be dropped. You will never solve the problem by paying everyone a "livable wage".

Everyone is fighting with each other over money. MONEY.

Why not go after the ones who own and create the money?! Hm? Or are you too scared to stand up to a corrupt government and law?

Hate the game, not the player.

You can and they will, nationwide. Lots of small business owners will be needing to do a bunch of low skill labor (like I do) if they want to survive.

The guy who owns a body shop, that probably charges $100 / hr. labor, and can't afford to pay employees because they are lazy and worthless. Why do you keep lazy and worthless employees? Why not hire someone instead that can be beneficial for the whole day ? Oh, because you would have to pay them at least $15 an hour and you can't afford that because your business isn't great, probably because you have lazy and worthless employees sitting around doing nothing.

As for the guy demeaning his friend for being a dishwasher, kind of shows who we are dealing with here. I personally think the least desirable jobs show pay the most. Work in a nice clean air conditioned office? Well maybe that salary should be lower than the guy digging the ditches, cleaning toilets, etc.

Walmart just reported record earnings after instituting a minimum wage in their organization. The better your employees are, the better your business will be, and you won't get good employees for $10 an hour.

The minimum wage originally had racist origins. It was designed to keep black trades workers from under cutting white workers.

The problem with minimum wages is that it tries to circumvent basic laws of supply and demand. When there are a lot of workers and fewer jobs, then the wages of said workers will decline. If there are a lot of jobs and few workers, then wages rise. This is why it is so comical that the left wants to raise minimum wage but then also wants to import cheap illegal immigrant labor.

Minimum wage jobs pay the minimum because they require minimum level of skill. The workers can be easily replaced and do not typically require much of any training. No one is going to pay $15/hr for a pimply faced 16 year old to drop fries at fast food restaurant.

These jobs are not supposed to be careers. They are bottom rung of the ladder jobs that people use as a stepping stone to better opportunities. You work it for a few months to build your skills / resume and get promoted or move on to a higher paying job.

All raising minimum wage does is make it that much easier for a business to justify investing in automation.

Honestly that sounds ridiculous.

Automation is coming no matter what that doesn't justify the nonsensical financial arguments that are made here

You are missing the point. You cannot stop automation. Businesses are always looking for ways to increase productivity through technology, etc.

However, sometimes it is easier to use cheap labor because the automation is 1) too expensive relative to the cost of labor and 2) does not do as good of a job.

I did a thread a few weeks ago about real world results of minimum wage in NYC and the car wash industry. It decimated that industry.

The best car washes used hand washers (cheap, minimum wage labor). However, when the new law went into effect, the cars washes could not afford them so they all went to automation because the ROI made sense relative to paying $15/hr.

The losers were the workers. In fact, the legislators created a black market because all the fired car wash workers went off on their own doing illegal car washes on the street instead of at formal car wash businesses. They can't afford to open a legit car wash so they do them illegally, but they also can't get hired at legit ones because no one is going to pay someone $15/hr to wash/dry cars.

This is ridiculous.

Pay should and usually is based on merit, and the job being performed.

Is there any doubt we are witnessing the collapse of a once sane & great nation?

I truly weep for my dear United States

On the bright side, black markets are tax free and their prevalence will only hasten the demise of an otherwise bloated and incompetent bureaucracy

I own a restaurant.

15 dollar minimum wage would end us.

Most of my cooks make about 11 an hour and and my servers make about 20 after tip out.

They are happy with the money they make because they are college students who understand that making pizza and flipping burgers everyday is not going to make you the big bucks. None of them have kids.

Thing is. These are jobs meant for high school and college kids. Not someone raising a family.

Learn to budget your life and work two jobs if your skill set < something you could train a 16 year old to do in 5 days.

I could fire anyone of my employees and replace them with a 16 year olds in 5 days for less money but i don't because that would immoral and my employees are good people.

I have been doing this for about 6 years now and I'm just starting to pay MYSELF a decent living wage. As the owner I paid myself LESS than minimum wage for a year just to get things going.

Say good bye to all your favorite restaurants.
You like having servers come to your table? No more job for them...
Watch retail become a walk in vending machine.
No car washes. No one to pick your fruit or vegetables unless they work for Monsanto.

So many jobs will become automated by robots and computers real quick.

It will be impossible for anyone without millions of dollars to start a new business and all those minimum wage workers will be out of work.

What really pisses me off is Amazon pays 0 dollars in taxes. I paid nearly all the profit I made last year, as well as employee taxes, and licensing.

you know.
Just enough to:
Work 25 hours a week.
Buy a house
Eat at fancy restaurants.
Buy a $35,000 car
have two kids and a wife
go on vacation three times a year

You know!? the American dream we were all taught is achievable with hard work a discipline, but without the hard work and discipline.

If the government had labor's best interests in mind we would have a 14 hour part-time worker limit.

But sadly, Corporations ARE the government.

1000 dollar phone 200 bucks a month phone charges 10 latte a week, so on and so on...I don't think people in the country really understand what a living wage should actually pay for.

Same as Seattle, but that is not state wide, and Seattle is not a sh@thole...

Some problems is non-profits have all left, lower hours at first actually caused less pay per month, prices went up as example McD has to pay $16 per hour so a McD hamburger is 4 bucks normally and there it is 8 bucks. Smaller businesses have moved, closed or run less workers, so less jobs over all and we are seeing things like kiosk.

The jury is still out with me though on all this...

Thank-you for sharing your experience from a $15 @ hour location.

Chicago already has 10.25% sales tax, that delivers ZERO benefits that any residents can see or feel. Raising the minimum wage will raise prices of goods/services. The 10.25% sales tax on top of a product that costs 20% more due to the minimum wage increase, is insane.

You get a raise from $8.25 to $15.00. You'll pay more in Federal/State Income Taxes, and the price of goods/services you purchase have increased by 30%. HORRIBLE!!

One thing about Chicago though, is that there are two states within 30 miles of the city that do not have a $15.00 minimum wage, and their sales taxes are low.. Indiana (3%) and Wisconsin (5%).

Many Illinois residents buy big-ticket items in those states and bring them back. For each $1,000, you save $50 or $70 in sales taxes alone, depending on which neighboring state you go to.
