President Trump will declare national emergency to get funding for border wall, says top Republican

Trump to declare emergency over wall

Literally just saw this pop up on BBC while I was browsing so its just breaking, I don't know specific details or any reaction yet but am guessing many on ATS will have something interesting to say about tit.

More news sources now reporting this thing, looks like its pretty much a done deal and he is moving to declare a full national emergency and use the military to build his wall.

President Donald Trump will sign spending legislation to prevent a government shutdown while declaring a national emergency to try to build his proposed border wall, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Thursday.

"He's prepared to sign the bill, he will also be issuing a national emergency declaration at the same time," the Kentucky Republican said as the chamber prepared to vote on a measure to keep the government open past a midnight Friday deadline.

Good, bout time to end this ridiculous budget dance.

We all know that none of these politicians actually care one way or the other.

Current bill they are voting on doesn't really do sh*t...

This is both parties. RINO Republicans are just as bad as Democrats. Both support illegal immigration for different reasons.

I hope that since he's going the national emergency route, he goes all in.

Allocate 100M+ plus, shut down border crossings to continue to put pressure on mexico to shore up it's southern border.

Yeah am aware of that but from the limited stuff I have read regarding reaction to this it looks like it could be controversial.

I'm sure, but they have a lot on their plate and that will make them distracted.

Right now all their primary attention is on the soon to unfold RBG situation.

Even if everyone knows he has the authority to do so, they will still try to tie it up in the lower courts. Kind of like how they did with the immigration restrictions at the start of his term.

this it looks like it could be controversial.

oh the democrats will wail like it is the end of the world, but do they want to be painted as against national security in a court fight that will surely include the very bill that they just passed that shows border protection is necessary?
it is the presidents judgement and he has that constitutional right
presidents declaring emergencies is nothing new or "controversial"

I'm torn.

I don't really care about the wall one way or the other... It doesn't address the root problems IMO.

However, I imagine it will help border security....

But that's not why I'm torn.

Congress controls the purse, and if he wins this one, it will set precedence for the future. Just like declaring war can now pretty much solely be done by the president without congressional approval.

While in this particular instance I don't really care, what about the future?

. . . . . . . Okay.

Let's hope that he can get this done and secure our borders.

That's what everyone wants, isn't it?

Secure borders?

Who doesn't want that?

My understanding is it still has to pass Congress. They will reject it. That would mean they then have to approve a resolution. So, the wall will be built.

Very very good !!

Now is the time for President Trump to build the "Mother Of All Walls".

We should hire a painter to put "M O A W" on the south side about every mile apart.

He is setting no precedence.
Presidents have declared emergencies and moved money before.
Congress agrees there is a problem.
They just differ on the severity.
Congress can change the funding he can move around at any time they wish.
They just don't have the numbers or actual will power to do so.

IMO I will be shocked if they take this to court as it is a stinking loser for them.
The court of msm public opinion is the only place this wins for them.
