Simple. right now we could make all new cars/motorcycles and houses to that standard. All houses with Solar panels and all motorcycles and cars electric. In ten years most the new cars will be off the road anyway and will be replaced by electric, naturally.

I don't think we can replace airplanes/jets etc. anytime soon.

What about trucking?
What about international shipping?
What about refueling stations needing conversion to electric from petroleum?

I am a huge believer in massively increasing the $$$ invested in energy storage tech. Smaller, lighter, safer, and higher capacity. Once the electric energy storage tech can meet the same energy storage capacity of petroleum based fuels, with the same or higher safety standards, then it will happen.

We're getting there. We have the Technology for cars and motorcycles now. Trucking is right around the corner. Shipping will take larger batter storage solutions but I don't think that's too far down the line either.

For a comparison. I got solar panels on my house a couple of years ago. The technology has increased just in those 2 years so that my panels could now be half the size with a little bit more output than my larger ones. That's just two years of Technologcal improvement in just one area.

But I don't see that happening in 12 years. So, just that aspect alone make the GND completely impossible and a pipedream. If she said 100 years, that would be closer to reality. Done in stages, with commitment form all sides, including the retooling of the entire major energy sector (meaning it needs to be profitable from day one or no dice).

We need to stop hailing pipe dreams and making realistic plans with details....not hopes.

So a portion of that would be to make all of our buildings in America a LOT more energy efficient, requiring the rebuilding or upgrading of approximately 136 million residential homes and 4.5 million commercial buildings

To some degree this is already being done to anyone who decides to upgrade or remodel their homes or property. Just ask any poor chump who gets hit with all the building codes, laws and permits to improve their property. Many of these regulations are as much about going "green" as they are about safety regulations. Now, most reasonable people would agree that moving toward renewable energy makes sense where possible, and that will be accomplished through free market entrepreneurs.

What's scary is any form of this " green deal " being mandated in a manner that requires upgrades per Federal Law. Can you imagine the " Department of Green Compliance " showing up at our homes and business's ? Some bureaucrat with a clip board , " sorry folks, you'll need to replace your stove, refrigerator, heating system or you'll be fined and or jailed, please sign here that you've been put on notice. " Holy Moly !!

Here in CA my previous employer was required to plant trees on a public city block in order to get approval to upgrade his office building , how the heck is that fair ? Not cheap small trees either, I think it cost him about 25k, it seems like extortion to me !

You and I both know that. I think the Green New Deal makes sense but only if it's changed/tweaked Compromised on.

If it was any other area of life, we'd see what works what doesn't and make it happen. Politics is always All or Nothing. Green deal no green deal Obama Care no Obama care. Wall no wall.

I still don't know why politicians can't work together and compromise like in any other area of life.

I don't think there are any proponents.

These topics are even debatable with how stupid they are.

People need to understand that people like aoc dont care for the future well being of the country.

They will try and pass radical ideas. Because even if it bankrupts or hurts the country, they believe its deserved.
Very scary mentality. 3rd world mentality

I think most people think that to have solar power you pop some solar panels up and away you go.

Not that easy, sparky.

First off, you are going to need a battery bank, a secondary source of energy generation and a lot of money.

Secondly, you are replacing all of your appliances. If you are normally going to go solar, for instance, you are going to be using a propane water heater, heating system, stove.

OOps... we can't use propane since it is a fossil fuel.

So back to the batteries... you will need more of those, more solar panels, a damn good backup for power like a generator.

Well crap.. no combustion motors anymore... uumm...

Third, you are redoing your house. Your windows, your insulation, your roof, etc.

Since you are there you might as well rewire your house for 12v led lighting... much more efficient.

Don't try telling someone like me who is off-grid power how easy it is to even be net-metered, much less self-sufficient.

Then the cars?

Let's just make everyone buy a new car!!!

Did you know that if you actually own an all-electric car, you are basically subsidizing the coal industry?

Since most of our power comes from coal at the moment...

Once that is swapped out, as another mentioned, you are increasing our power needs as a nation a thousandfold.

This bill was not meant to be passed. It was nothing more than the first step in a presidential campaign. A future "Look what I can do" moment for the feeble minded.

As they say, you have one chance at a first impression, and first impressions are everything.

This, was a far less than stellar first impression of her abilities IMO.

Again, kudos for enthusiasm, but, we do need reality not pie-in-the-sky ideas that we would be expected to pay for in this country.

generalizing an entire group because you just don't have what it takes to join a discussion isn't a good look.

yet people call her dumb

why?

Because she is, as well as the idiots that elected her. She's certainly not the sharpest tool in the shed, by any stretch.

I have a few close friends that live in NY, they see her as an embarrassment. One friend can't wait till his retirement so he can get the hell out of there. He's sick of the high taxes and living in a state ran by idiots, he said. Of course by default that's Trump's fault somehow.

All you AOC, Socialist hating, racists arguing about such simplistic things just proves you are not about what America is...morally! How dare you attack such a brilliant thinker like AOC??? You disgust me!

Don't you know that all fossil fuels can be replaced by Unicorn farts? They contain rainbows...the most powerful force in the universe. All we need is 5.6 Unicorns well fed on GMO and love and we will be fine. PS: Anyone know where we find all the Unicorns?

And a woman's body is hers...not yours. Well...not if she is just born...then her body and her life are her mother's choice. I guess only a woman doctor would murder the child since it wouldn't be moral for a man to kill a female...assuming you can tell what gender it wants to be a few moments after birth. So...well...trans...ummmm...RAINBOWS!!!!

Taking 90% of the money from the rich, the business owners and the businesses that employ the rest of us is GENIUS! They don't need 5 million dollars a year so we are going to take 90% of everything over 1 million. Its not like anyone will decide to get paid only 1 million and then take stock options, or a nicer car and an upgrade on the businesses tropical get-aways. The business will gladly turn over 90% to the government instead of banking it and growing the company.

And finally BALLOONS! Lots and lots of balloons. Red and yellow and pink and green...purple and orange and blue I can see a RAINBOW...see a rainbow...ummm...forgot the words.

BALLOONS, RAINBOWS and UNICORNS.

Thank you

AOC (aka Horse Face)

The idea that eliminating fossil fuels at this rate wouldn't destroy the us economy on which it is based is quite ludicrous.

AOC had changed what's she's saying about this so many times in one week that it's odd anyone would support this person. It's frankly embarrassing someone this confused and illiterate got elected. Behind closed doors the real Democratic leaders must be livid.

She is throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks and is in love with her own image in the news. She's a media whore, not a leader. Come on Dem's you can do better than this. Please do better than this. Please do not vote for anyone for President who signed on with AOC.

Since so much of the toxicity stays in the countries like Africa where the rare earth mining takes place, it's out of sight, out of mind. They can feel virtuous about it all.

It's actually pretty funny, that volcano in iceland that went crazy for 4 days undid all of the green economic work and hardship of the the entire human race for the last 20 years. If these greenies really want to effect change, they should develop something that stops volcanoes from dumping millions of tons of toxic materials in the atmosphere. They might also want to learn that carbon dioxide is good, plants and micro organisms use carbon and pump out oxygen, the stuff we need.

On second thought, they had probably better not stop volcanoes from venting. It might end up like with women, if you stop them from farting they tend to explode.

Cheers - Dave

I've been saying for years that I would not invest in airline stocks. Right now, you can do video calls on your phone or computer and that's almost as good as an in person meeting. So, I predict a decrease in business travel, because we just no longer need it.

Recreational travel will keep some airlines alive but not like we now know it.

As for rebuilding the buildings in the US. The building codes changed in the early 1980s and house built since then are much more energy efficient. I do think that it's time we as a nation look at how we spend energy and I think that very efficient buildings would improve the quality of life for many people. So, I'd rather see a big government program to upgrade the efficiecy of buildings, then to subzidize corperate farms.

I live where we have 300 sunny days per year. I think that all houses should have to have solar panels so that at a minimum they are energy neutral in terms of heating an d cooling for the year. It just make sense to me.
