How a Historian Nailed Billionaires for Their Greed at Davos

Historian criticizes Billionaires At Davos about their excessive greed. Something they won't listen to of course since their god mammon must be served

He mentions that there were 1500 private jets at Davos

A historian’s remarks at a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, have gone viral after he told billionaires if they want to solve inequality, all they need to do is pay their taxes. In a video posted by Now This and viewed more than 5 million times, Dutch historian Rutger Bregman heavily criticizes billionaires who talk about solving inequality, but fail to actually do the main thing he says will help.

I make this point here underneath many times of the robust economy in the ’50s when the Tax rate was 70 percent for the rich.

Bregman called out tech billionaire Michael Dell for asking people to name one country where a top tax rate of 70 percent had worked. “The United States, that’s where it has actually worked, in the 1950s,” he said. Under Dwight Eisenhower, a Republican president, tax rates for the ultra-rich peaked at just over 90 percent. Bregman also noted the irony of Davos attendees flying to the Swiss mountain town on 1,500 private jets to hear broadcaster David Attenborough give a speech about how people are destroying the planet.

You are better off taxing those in America with incomes of less then $15000.00 a year. In that way the Dollar store would have to lower their prices to the new name of : 50cent stores.

Most people don't realize that taxing the working man to go to work is really insane. You see the gang of politicians get their lavishly lifestyle from those that suffer the most because of the rate of net income on taxes taken out is greater on the poor soul making about 400 dollars a week. It sucks to work 1.5 days just to pay your weekly (slavery) taxes to no good politician living high of the hog at our expense.
Life sucks when you think about.
Time to buy a sail boat.

The guy makes the point that all these billionaires, who can thank the society they live in for giving them the opportunity to become billionaires, if only they just paid their taxes maybe many of the social ills can be dealt with

The problem is when the politicians have tax money they come up with ideas like this:

So instead of breaking up monopolies, closing loopholes or prosecuting corruption that would actually make strides toward fixing the broken system they instead merely want to further exploit it and exacerbate the problem as long as is it now serving their god: them.

Is that for real?

Turtles? I've never seen a turtle in a tunnel. Maybe a rat or two but turtle...no.

This is so stupid.

And when they do? Its not enough. So you say they still aren't paying their taxes. Eventually you'll run out of other peoples money, which would then make one wonder if they were the problem in the first place.

Those b*****ds at Davos didn't invite me again this year. They discriminate against me just because I don't have a private jet.

I see their point that I'm not a greedy person so I wouldn't fit in. But I can learn! Maybe I have terrific ideas how to ruin the planet for my own gain. How will you be sure unless to get to know me and find out?

All I can say is I'm sure the 1% of the 1% of the 1% welcomed his finger wagging admonishment with smiles and open hearts. I for one am glad the world will start being a better place now.

Didn't take even one minute into the video for him to use the classic catch phrase "fair share"
They never can explain what that means though...

And you would think that a historian would know that nobody ever paid that 90% tax.

A historian who doesnt know history... why am I not surprised.

So what if world business leaders flew 1500 private jets? What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

If anything it shows how robust an economy can be when people can be successful and fly private, not just royalty.

Those private planes compsnies employ tens of thousands of people because there are people who can afford to buy or lease one.

People are billionaires because they create a product or service that people want and freely pay money for...

That is real.
That's what Florida did with a lot of money they received from Barry's Bail-Out Federal Tax Money (I guess the turtles were too big to fail)
Not a single turtle used the tunnel (at least for the year folks kept up with the story)

I take it from your avatar you like war? How about a war of the rich versus the poor, would you be down with that?

Also how is it in your avatar you get to write hunter of soros paid shills, yet when I post the word shill it results in the removal of my post for breaking T&C’s?

The problem is that democrats are going about it all wrong. You don't give more money to corrupted individuals and expect good things in return.

The democrats need to IMMEDIATELY stop talking about global warming, welfare, more taxes, socialized healthcare and solely concentrate on removing the conflict of interest in DC from ALL parties , before asking for more money from anyone.

You could raise the billionaires tax rate to 100% and they would still pay no taxes because of deductions and loopholes they take advantage off. So stop preaching about taxing the rich. In the current system only the middle class will get hit with the tax increase and get nothing in return, just like today.

Today the rich already pay a higher tax rate, yet due to deduction, creative accounting, and loopholes they pay less than most.

Note there are no baby steps to take here, only one step that must come first and that is to get rid of conflict of interest before expanding gov't in any manner.

So don't talk about raising taxes ,socialized anything , and asking for more money until you fix the system that is riddled with conflict of interests.

Until than the Democrats and socialist can kiss my Arse.

I would say fair share is the same income to tax ratio for anyone that is not on welfare assistance with NO deductions.

So Joe Schmoe plumber making 60K a year pays 20% income tax on 60K . While MR bigly CEO making 6M a year pays 20% on 6M income .

After the Bigly CEO have to pay the same 20% with no deductions, it will surely go down to maybe 10%. Not only due to the extra revenue that would be brought in from the top, but they would equally get hit and would streamline gov't to be more efficient.

If 1500 billionaires can't be trusted to perform philanthropy in a way that helps the common man, how can taxing them and giving a single government entity the wealth of 1500 billionaires be trusted to perform philanthropy in a way that helps the common man?

Concentrating wealth results in concentrated power. It does not concentrate compassion. Our politicians are no more beholden to us than our billionaires are.

We cannot fix the problems of our world with taxation no more than we can fix the problems with philanthropy. We have to fix the underlying problems in our economy that result in the creation of 1500 billionaires instead of 150 million successful entrepreneurs.

You're bad at reading body language. Tired of conflict, but willing to fight on.

Also, I'm not directing that towards any one person. I imagine you were?

Fight on against who exactly? The poor?

No I was just curious as you seemed all macho in your attitude. Personally I can’t stand the sociopathic creeps that attend Davos and would gladly fight them all. I don’t generally believe in violence but I doubt I’m the only who’s blood is about to boil.

Good post.
The conflict of interest needs to end.
But that will be like trying to freeze hell since it would be hurting both politicians and the corrupt wealthy elite.
