The United States isn't, and never should be a religious or Christian / Catholic nation. You're free to practice any religion you want, but it should stay OUT of government completely.

Except when it comes to footbaths in schools and universities, first muslim congressman, and all things muslim.

Then it's thumping that Qu'ran til the Mahdi comes home.

We are a secular nation with separation of church and state, God has no place in our legal system.

I believe this is a "trial balloon" floated by Democrats, since they are now the Majority Party in the U.S. House. If there are not many complaints, every House committee will follow suit.

A draft of a new committee rules package expected to be approved this week would strike the phrase, “So help me God,” from the oath witnesses take when they testify before the House Committee on Natural Resources.

I don't know the logic behind omitting the name of our creator from the, "I swear to tell the truth" oath. But Democrats will pay a "divine price" for doing so.

Add the removal of "God" from oaths, to passing laws enabling legal murder of God's children, at any time before birth, and Democrats are looking at party extinction.

Turning a blind eye to the damage done to Americans by Illegal Aliens and Illegal Drugs coming here from Mexico, is accelerating the Democratic party's journey to oblivion.

Good for Dems..

No one believes in “So help me God” phrase any longer, historically those who chanting or swear by it are those mostly lies, cheats, steal and gives orders to kill millions of innocent people around the globe.

“We all are children’s of God” before and after birth….

Time to remove something that gives the exact opposite meaning…

the "religious identity" of a nation, weather it is godly or godless begins within the hearts and minds of the people, who will then carry them into their daily lives and influence the world around them. it is not a power that should be forced down onto the people from the top, that only creates the likes of the saducees and pharisees, vipers and snakes, using and abusing "god" as an excuse to expand their power, position, and wealth.
"christian values" are not enjoying such a high place in our society as they have enjoyed in the past because they do not share that high of place in as many hearts. they may have been replaced with a different belief system. the whole idea of religion and god may have been caste aside as worthless and useless, a fairy tale told to youngsters.
it's not the gov't's job to preserve the religion which is what I think is the main motivation driving this idea that god needs to be put back into the gov't. it's up to the religious leaders to figure out why so many have left their ranks, why the religion seems to no longer full fill the needs of the people.

Im an atheist so honestly me saying that oath is like praising Santa clause or the Easter bunny. A big nothing burger.

But there is one thing I find truely annoying about the whole situation.
We just had a government shutdown end in a temporary situation and it will start again in a few weeks if not resolved.

Tell me why the hell politicians are wasting time with this trivial garbage instead or working on the looming shutdown?
The priorities of our supposed leadership is disturbing.

maybe I am wrong, but weren't there quite a few conservatives having a fit not that long ago about some of the new congressmen and women using something other than the bible when they were sworn in??
here's an idea, let people decide what words they want to say...
so help me god, so help me goddess, so help me great volcano god, or, so help me me!!!
but, if people are gonna have a fit, claim that some shouldn't be on the congress because they refuse to be sworn in in the manner you would like, under the god that you believe is real... then ya, maybe god should just be left out of it!! or at least our various preferences of just who, and what that god is!!!

When all reasons are argued away, the one thing left standing is tradition. It is an American tradition to swear on the Bible. It is customary. You can use some other text or even none but it is traditions that define us as a people, that make who we are. So I say keep the tradition even if some may decline to follow it. It hurts no one. You won't go to jail for not doing it but it as American as the pledge of allegiance.

Eisenhower included 'In God We Trust' on our money in 1957. I believe a federal court ruled that this was NOT unconstitutional and could stay as recent as 2018. I would suspect that this swearing in oath will follow the same path...it will be determined that there is no conflict nor is it unconstitutional and will remain.

It's not unconstitutional because YOUR money isn't OUR money.
Federal reserve money belongs to the private bank that's ruining (really has already ruined) OUR country.

Isn't under government control at all. President shouldn't have had any power to add a phrase to it- but they allowed it because that's part of the game they play to make you think that money is backed by anything more than the will of a few rich assholes in a board room.

Precisely where I'm at. I'm an agnostic atheist, so I don't believe in God, but I don't push my beliefs on anyone.

I'm a man of my word, I don't like to lie, and certainly wouldn't like to lie under oath. But saying so help me God isn't putting any extra moral weight on me.

I don't care if that's something that's in an oath though, I can play along for traditions sake should it remain, I'm not so fickle that I would let it offend me. I still go to church when I visit my mom out of respect as I know it's an eternal damnation thing.

I'd say many if not most communists are forced to act as such. Many citizens live in desparity in those conditions and do not like it. Much like many monarchies used religion to control their people hundreds/thousands of years ago.

We are all the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and the Flying Spaghetti Monster is all.

We are above such archaic terms as "God", as it eludes to a single entity/deity.

And in his/our name, Ramen.

Politicians would do better to just swear oaths to each other rather than to God. That way they won't have to make any promises to God they know they won't be keeping.
