Rep. Bennie Thompson, a lawmaker from Mississippi, is in charge of the House Homeland Security Committee. Looks like he aims to change the focus of domestic terrorism strategy from the threat of homegrown Muslim terrorism to far right, white nationalist, and anti-Semitic groups.

U.S. domestic terrorism strategy that he believes has focused too heavily on the threat of homegrown Muslim terrorism and too little the rise of far right, white nationalist, and anti-Semitic groups….Under Republican control from 2011 until last week, the House Homeland Security Committee repeatedly rejected calls by Thompson and Democrats for specific probes of domestic far right activities….That emphasis will change under the Democrats. The new terrorists are “homegrown” and include nationalists (shorthand for racist), constitutionalists, and libertarians. There will be hearings and possible show trials in the months ahead.

And if you don’t like that source, because, let’s face it, ZeroHedge is way, way biased, then here is McClatchy, for whatever it is they are biased for:
Hate groups are about to find lawmakers eager to scrutinize them

Thompson intends to hold hearings to spotlight what experts say is a growth of deadly right wing extremism in America, even if the hearings could feature members of white supremacist groups. “There are some people, I understand, who have belonged to those groups in the past, so there might be an opportunity for dialogue there,” Thompson said….Hate crimes have spiked dramatically — incidents spiked 5.9 percent in 2017 over 2016, according to the FBI — but the House last year took no final action to help curb the trend. And the White House and Rep. Steve King, a veteran Republican lawmaker, have come under fire for indicating sympathy for white nationalists before clarifying they in fact were against hate and bigotry.Several terrorism experts say attention to the issue is long overdue.
They say that the government has largely ignored the growth of a violent far right that exploded into the public consciousness with the deadly explosion of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995. by Timothy McVeigh, an anti-government extremist.
“For all the intense focus on preventing terrorism, there’s a large blind spot about terrorism from the far right,” said Michael German, a former FBI agent and a fellow at New York University’s Brennan Center for Justice.

Seems like just yesterday I discussing something along these lines with someone.
Anyone heard of this “far right domestic terrorism” stuff?

It's a crime that happens to college students when they meet someone who disagrees with them I'm sure.

You were just having this discussion, I was reading it all

While I like idea, I'm worried its going to be seen as an attack on the other side. Hopefully his homeland security background makes him the right candidate to lead this.

I am quite proud of the GOP reaction to Steve King.

I hope we can focus on all hate groups and minimize their destruction.

The bigger question is:

Is this about eliminating "hate groups" or is this about silencing your political rivals? Given the track record of the Democrats from just this past 2 years alone, I'm gonna go with the latter.

Oh, the House of Reps. is very publically dumping all over Rep. Steve King (the "White Nationalist) on CSPAN right now. He is not going to be able to share play time with fellow members on any committee, and he has no friends.

I think he is sad right now.

“Think the same way as we think or we’ll criminalise you”

The very definition of fascism.

Anyone read the 21 rules of the communist manifesto?

“Hate group”. Hmmmmmm, I wonder what a weak, gutless pussy like the vape-shop screecher would define as a “hate group”???
Maybe a group of people who build hot rods?
Maybe a group of people who go to the range?
Or maybe even a group of people who vote differently?

“Hate group”. I’d love to hear a definition for that. I imagine any definition given would easily encompass aNtifa, blm, islam and all leftwing extremist groups.

Which is why you won’t ever hear a definition of “Hate group”

Looking forward to seeing the change in definitions to suite an awry political objective that is based in absolute idiocy.

Class A deflection from any semblance of actual terrorism.

Right. That is what I meant by, "I'm worried its going to be seen as an attack on the other side. Hopefully his homeland security background makes him the right candidate to lead this."

I think if a moderate Republican brought this to the table it would have totally different context.

I do think we have home grown terrorists that we over look. Let's not forget about the current terrorists we are bread to hate, but lets add in all terrorists.

I don't know a lot about Rep. Bennie Thompson's homeland security background, but I hope it brings real insight and not just more partisan arguments.

“Hate group”. I’d love to hear a definition for that.

A hate group is a social group that advocates and practices hatred, hostility, or violence towards members of a race, ethnicity, nation, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation or any other designated sector of society. According to the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), a hate group's "primary purpose is to promote animosity, hostility, and malice against persons belonging to a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin which differs from that of the members of the organization

Here is some more on hate groups, in case you are interested:

In the US, two private organizations that monitor intolerance and hate groups are the Anti-Defamation League (ADL)[2] and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).[3] They maintain lists of what they deem to be hate groups, supremacist groups and anti-Semitic, anti-government or extremist groups that have committed hate crimes. The SPLC's definition of a "hate group" includes any group with beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people—particularly when the characteristics being maligned are immutable.[4] However, at least for the SPLC, inclusion of a group in the list "does not imply a group advocates or engages in violence or other criminal activity."[5] According to the SPLC, from 2000 to 2008, hate group activity saw a 50 percent increase in the US, with a total of 926 active groups.[6] Recently[when?] the term alt-right, short for "alternative right," has come into usage.[7][8] This broad term includes a range of people who reject mainstream conservatism in favor of forms of conservatism that may embrace implicit or explicit racism or white supremacy. The alt-right is described as "a weird mix of old-school neo-Nazis, conspiracy theorists, anti-globalists, and young right-wing internet trolls—all united in the belief that white male identity is under attack by multicultural, "politically correct" forces."[

“Any other designated sector of society”

There you have it. aNtifa IS a ‘hate group’ by very definition.

That definition is going to have to change now.

Even though they more-than meet the definition.

Funny that

I imagine the brownshirts weren’t on Hitler’s list of ‘hate groups’ either.

If we’re at a point where you can’t tell the difference between hate groups and the Democrats political rivals, I’d say it’s too late.
