Considering how many Obama holdovers there are in Government I don’t blame him. Communications with foreign states is usually secret. How is this news?

Why only hide your activities with Russia then? Why wouldn’t he hide his meetings with all diplomats? Also, why hide the interactions from his own officials he hired?

If Trump is in cahoots with the Russians as the OP and Washington Post claim, why would he use a US translator at all to speak with Putin? If he is working with the Russians, why wouldn't he just use Russian translators???

He did that too.

Bremmer said Trump got up from his seat halfway through dinner and spent about an hour talking “privately and animatedly” with Putin, “joined only by Putin’s own translator.”

The lack of a US translator raised eyebrows among other leaders at the dinner, said Bremmer, who called it a “breach of national security protocol.”

Logic by Trump supporters that try to even paint this in a good light is utterly baffling and sadly hilarious, at the same time. There is nothing OK or "right" about having secret meetings with Russia. Even if trying to rebuild ties, having secret meetings doesn't somehow make that magically better. Russia cares about advantage - gain - something that benefits them. NOT if Trump privately has meetings with them.

Even if this wasn't fishy (and it is - why would you do this, while under investigation for secretly dealing with Russia?!), you are all completely brainwashed and bamboozled by Trump, if you actually believe he is more clever than Putin in any way. Putin can strategically and politically run circles around Trump all day long. He has many more years experience, KGB intelligence training, and Trump must seem a fool to him. But one he can play for his own gain. Even if there was nothing beyond Trump wanting to truly build ties, he is a moron for now allowing his own politically skilled advisers to not be in the meetings, or at -least- be allowed to see the meeting notes afterwards.

What a buffoon. And what trusting fools his constituents are.

You wanna move to Russia, where the "smart" leaders preside?

Poor thing.

I'd prefer if our own leader wasn't a narcissist buffoon. I can only hope voters are smart enough to prevent it from happening again in 2020, but I guess we'll see. Hopefully they have a better choice than Hillary, to make it an easier decision.

Ok and every time Obama or Bush Jr or Clinton sat down with a foreign diplomat all those meetings were televised and previewed by the general public right. No they were not just because Russia was the bogey man after we kicked was on Hitler and his goons during the cold war does not mean we need to keep demonizing relations with them for Christ sake Russia and China are the main 2 threats we really face so anything we can do to make friends with the two of them the better. Imagine the defense savings we could have if we were allies with both.

Russia and China view friendly overtures as a sign of weakness, and they are exploiting trump and the American people as we speak.

International relations aren't carried out like in Mayberry RFD!

trump just doesn't want the American people to see just how far he compromised the homeland. That's treason!

Do you really think having secret meetings with Russia is going to suddenly create lifelong peace and harmony? You are naive if you do. Russia and China have no desire to be close buddies with the U.S., any more than the U.S. wants it with them. All countries are acting in the best interest of their own country (or should be).

Also having meetings where no one is privy to the contents of that meeting in no way endears a friendship - it's just sheer stupidity. You have politically skilled advisers. Staff who are experts in foreign affairs. Why in the world wouldn't you use that asset? Only a fool would not. Trump is either a fool, or hiding something. Your choice!

No, but every time a past POTUS sat down with Putin there were note-takers in the room and the notes from Note Takers, the US Translator and POTUS himself were put together in a "read-out" for the US Government (who POTUS speaks for in those meetings).

Putin does the same.

They weren't discussing football, they were discussing US Policy in Syria, Ukraine, Israel etc.

The idea A US President would work to keep those conversations secret is outrageous.

The fact that someone leaked a word for word transcript of the presidents conversation with another foreign leader is outrageous.

It's not an inside track, it's history, current events and a little investigation with sources besides right wing propaganda spewing trumps lies like Brietbart, Drudge and Fox.

I'm almost certain the CIA and thus Mueller know exactly what the twitter in chief discussed with Putin.

Schools out, now go play....

Good Job! Excellent opening post.
Every day its something new and every day there is more and more that they have to spin to make something sound like its normal.
In the meanwhile they see nothing. They know nothing. Kind of like Schultz in Hogans Heros.

No its not usually secret...

Those meetings become part of the presidential record. The notes are to be preserved.
Clintons meetings and notes have just been declassified and released to the public.

Every meeting every telephone call is supposed to be recorded in some way to preserve the correspondence.

Who knows, but if Trump came up with the idea, it can't be anything too deep, I'm certain. Personally I don't think he was discussing nefarious things with Putin. I think he honestly believes he is politically and intelligence-wise, better than all his staff, and he doesn't want their opinion - or possible blow-back telling him he made a stupid offer to Putin. He can't handle criticism, not even from his own staff. I mean c'mon - he literally said he knew more about the ISIS crisis than ALL the Generals in the Middle East. He fully believed this. He was not right - but he believed it.

So I'm sure he thinks he knows how to handle Putin best, talk with Putin, doesn't want advice, nor criticism after the fact.

Think about it though - what in the world could he possibly talk about that it would make ANY sense to exclude his entire staff from knowing about it? It doesn't make sense. It's right to question it, as it is very abnormal.

5 Meetings we know of between President Trump and Putin.
Sec of State Tillerson was present for only one of them.

As for that singular meeting Rex Tillerson attended, he failed to provide a summary or read out to anyone.

But we do know that Rex Tillerson thought the President was an "F**** Moron".

It would be best if the President did what every President before him did and keep records of his conversations with Foreign Leaders.
