This was my first solo flight.I was maintaining cruising speed in my Piper Cub,
when suddenly I had power failure.I checked the fuel gauges, engine gauges
and oil pressure gauges.I don't know what's wrong.
I call in a mayday and start looking for a place to land. All I can see is wooded
area with lots of trees.Mumbling to myself,I try to remember what I was taught.
Maintain altitude,dead stick landing,spiral pattern,1000' above field...darkness.
I come to and see that I crashed in the woods. The windshield is cracked and
smoke is coming from the control panel.I unhook my seat belt and free myself
from the wreakage.
I don't think I was off course.I was about halfway through my flight plan when
I crashed.I remembered the E.L.T.(Emergency Locator Transmitter) and used
my pocket knife to remove it from the plane.
Looking around I found a stump and sat down for awhile.I am glad that the
E.L.T. has a portable antenna. What seems like hours later,I hear something
above me.A search and rescue helicopter has picked up my signal,I'm going
home.The end
