Tesla. They still haven't produced the "affordable" $35,000 version of the Model 3 they've been promising for years. It's not hard to figure out why: they would lose money on every unit sold. Worse, demand for the Model 3 appears to have peaked already, Tesla has recently cut their prices in the US, and cut them in China a couple of times by now, so we can expect them to go back to losing money again.

Indeed much of the pollution issues we face would be solved had we moved to electric, not to mention all the tech advances we would see in that area.

So lack of tech led the way for fossil fuel powered vehicles, I notice Telsa wasnt mentioned in the article. I wonder if he had sank his teeth into the electric car market some significant improvements would have occurred and just maybe the electric car wouldn't have gone by the way of the dodo.

If you really wanted to bring back the entire fossil fuel industry, then every American should own an electric car.

Since over 60% of our electricity is generated by fossil fuels.

Owning an electric car in America is, in essence, subsidizing the fossil fuel industry.

As opposed to Norway, whose 5 million citizens get the majority of their electricity through hydroelectric power.

Which they have been working on since the late 1890's.

We don't have the topography to support 318 million people with hydroelectric power, much less the cars.

Apples and oranges, but yes, it's all about Democratic Socialism...

And edited for irony, the money that Norway uses to run their entire economy is... from their oil production.

How did they punish them?

By taxing them more? If you get a tax break for buying electric, you're essentially getting fined for buying gas (A fine that's called a tax is still a fine).

Doing something in a roundabout way that doesn't meet the textbook definition of the word "punish" doesn't change what it is.

It's a hardly a competitive market if the government can side with an industry to the detriment of another, that's a communist ideal that is very destructive .

If the government is going to be neutral, then what do you propose that it should do? I cannot see the sense in saying the government should be neutral and then saying that the government should side with the weakest competitor to make things fair. That sounds crazy.
