President Donald Trump has said Deputy Defence Secretary Patrick Shanahan will take the job of Defence Secretary on January 1st undercutting Mattis's date of departure by 2 months.

I am pleased to announce that our very talented Deputy Secretary of Defense, Patrick Shanahan, will assume the title of Acting Secretary of Defense starting January 1, 2019. Patrick has a long list of accomplishments while serving as Deputy, & previously Boeing.
He will be great!

The new British Secretary of Defence has no military experience either , there were eyebrows raised when he was appointed.

A non military man for Secretary of Defense. What could possibly go wrong?

They should love him over at the Pentagon...

McNamara, Rumsfeld, Hagel, Pennetta, Gates and many more all were in the military.
Ash Carter was not, but he was an expert on National Security.

The vast majority of Secretaries of defense were in the military.

Can't wait to hear all the "Constitutional crisis" people talk about this temporary appointment too.

The below sums up the choice pretty succinctly:

Mr. Shanahan, who, like Mr. Mattis, is from Washington State, is a former Boeing executive. Aides say that Mr. Trump likes him in part because he often tells the president that he is correct to complain about the expense of defense systems.

Ah , I'm a Leftist again , few days ago I was called a Right Wing nut job (prob not those words) , why does everybody have to be pigeonholed ?

This is why we have civilian authority over the military.

That's exactly how it works. For every president.

If you're going to apply one standard to Trump and not the others, at least check and see if Trump is doing anything new. I assure you he isn't.

Sure but military leadership of the military seems sensible to me.

It's rough these days talking politics. If you are in the middle and evaluate things by their real impact and identify the truth and falacies using wisdom you are slammed as a lefty or righty by both sides.

The people on the far left or far right are not wise, they are stuck in their beliefs and use ad hominum tactics to slam people to keep them in line with their beliefs. You are either with us or against us is a stupid philosophy but it used on many issues country wide and to a less extent world wide.
