Surfing, standing up on a surfboard, was first documented by James Cook upon his discovery of the Hawaiian Islands, it seems that is where the sport originated. But other forms of surfing (canoes, body surfing, prone surfing) were documented earlier in the western pacific.

With tow-in surfing (which is what this is), the boards have foot straps, and are very small compared to paddle-in boards.

Awesome to watch and thanks for the info.

I think for the record the biggest wave ever surfed was 79-80 feet. I don't think it read how tall this one was on original post.

Surf boards now have built in technology and GPS to tell the surfer exactly how fast he or she is going. Fastest on record was 39.1 KM/H.

That would be worn on the wrist.

There have been faster. But these are not on giant waves.

Big Kahuna there!

Riding monster waves is amazing to watch. That place in Portugal gets some huge swells. There were claims of 111+ feet being ridden but not verified.

I think I had the 80 foot one up in BTS.

The tow in would be more than enough for me! Heck, I would happy with a 20-footer! Been down some of the peaks in Valdez on my snowboard and it takes a special kind to even step onto the mountain let alone ride down one, so, to Tom Butler...

For doing what few have done, can do, or even want to do!!!!

But their balls are very big.

There is a narrow u shaped canyon a couple of miles off shore that funnels the water into these monsters, so it is a regular thing - there is no waiting around for months for the perfect conditions (always a bonus!).

It only happens when the waves come from a certain direction, it's not a permanent thing.

Like Hawaii, it seems to be a winter surf location (but colder).

It takes major North Atlantic storms to produce the right swell.
