British Surfer Tom Butler has ridden a record 100 ft high wave off the coast of Portugal.

This is a spectacular sight to be seen. How some people have the nerve to do this is beyond me. Very impressive.

Lots of BIG waves have been surfed there over the years.
This one looks bigger IMHO, we will wait for the official confirmation.

Sure have been some monsters at Nazare.

I just can't even imagine a wave that big!!

I saw some 40 foot tall waves in Hawaii one time and even they didn't look real. Just monstrous! And guys were surfing them too. Looked like a giant wall of water.

This wave is 2+ times bigger!

I agree. I've seen a couple videos with waves much larger than the OP's. Not sure how they measure.

I have a love/hate relationship with the ocean. I love being near it. It's beautiful. The ocean breeze and smell. However, I'm terrified of the thought of floating in the open water. The wave in your comment is nightmare fuel.

There is a narrow u shaped canyon a couple of miles off shore that funnels the water into these monsters, so it is a regular thing - there is no waiting around for months for the perfect conditions (always a bonus!).

We know the geology and its effects. Can you imagine going back in time when none of this was known and then straying too close to shore in your top heavy wooden ship? Must have been terrifying!

I was in Nazare a few years ago, crazy waves out there..

The town is also awesome! great sea food and cheap drinks. Be wary of the vodka red bull with half a pint of vodka in it. my neice done a 100 metre projectile vomit down the back of our taxi driver on the way back to the villa
had to drop him 50 euro to clean it up

I agree LOL they have to zoom out further to get the whole monster height in the frame, and the surfer looks like a speck going like a bat out of hell down the swell. Amazing sphincter puckering video

I love surfing...being from CNY, I only tried it one time and could never make the pop up.

It led me to wonder, who decided, hey...lets get a piece of wood, go out into the ocean and ride those waves?

I'm going with either bored beachcomber or ship wreck survivor.

Hope he gets the record.

Now imagine a 1720 ft tsunami, in Alaska in 1958, that two people survived, and one of them was just a boy. There's a whole documentary on it.

geology.com...

Large waves are humbling if anyone has ever been in them.
