NEWS: Remains of U.S. pilot shot down in Korean War found in China, page 1

The remains of Capt. Troy "Gordie" Cope who was shot down over the Yalu river in North Korea have been recovered in China. Recent historical evidence has come to light that the Mig-15 that has shot Cope down were flown by Russian pilots. Speculation has been growing for decades that the former Soviet Union captured many of these pilots and took them back to Russia to exploit them.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Closing a curious chapter of Korean War history, the Pentagon announced Friday it had identified the remains of an Air Force pilot whose jet crashed on Chinese territory after being shot down during a dogfight with a Russian flying for North Korea.

The case puts a spotlight on a Russian role in the 1950-53 Korean War that was kept quiet for decades and helped feed speculation inside the American government that the Russians had attempted -- and perhaps managed -- to capture U.S. pilots to exploit them for intelligence purposes.

It was serendipity that he was discovered. An American business man in 1995 saw his tog tag in a military museum in the city of Dandong, China. Its easy to look back and comment on the "domino theory" and if it was valid, but for people back in the 1950's the specter of communist domination of the world must have been quite a fear.
