In her tweet, Cortez isn't asking for a raise for herself. She's expressing her surprise and dismay that so many staffers and interns have to work two jobs, one of them being public service and the other being food and beverage service! She's asking that staffers, and interns, be paid a "living wage".

Outta here with those facts! Brown woman bad.

Is she "brown"?

I hadnt noticed.

Glad that is apparently important to you though!

As others have said, she is not saying her salary isnt enough, but that interns working in washington deserve more.

As far as I am aware, these interns are not forced to work, so if the money is not enough, they should leave. Clearly they feel there is some benefit to them being interns, perhaps they feel the connections they are gaining is worth more than just a pay check.

If she feels strongly, perhaps she will donate some of her 6 figure yearly salary to interns.

Part of the problem is that many in government (all levels) think that it is a business. Want more office stuff or a raise, just raise taxes on the people (customers).

everyone is focusing only on the intern angle

she also said

& underpaid overworked staff

doesnt work as well as just intern?

i mean if people are going to talk about what she said then talk about what she said

so along with interns she is saying staff is underpaid

anyone going to comment on that or just going to stick with the intern angle?

I had not noticed her skin color at all. In fact now that I am looking at pictures of her, she seems lighter than many girls I know that would call themselves white, many of whom are italian. i If she had been darker I would have noticed it but it wouldn't have mattered to me. But honestly from the pictures I saw of her i never thought of her as brown.

Noticing something isnt wrong. Insinuating anyone with a problem with her does so because she is "brown" is a joke and clearly only a racist would feel such a thing.

I noticed she is a socialist, I dislike her policies.

Her skin color means absolutely nothing to me.

i agree with your middle part

her skin color means nothing to me either

that was my only point

Ok she said staff and intern.

My entire posts applies to staff as well.

What are the staff making?

I found this from a while ago, saying some make as low as 30000 a year.

Long hours, stressful work environments, and low-pay make the turnover rate among Congressional staffers extremely high.

Turnover is so high, in fact, that 46%of staffers would look for a new job within a year due to a “desire to earn more money,” according to a study cited by The Hill. That’s understandable considering that the median pay for staff assistants—the most common position in the House’s workforce—is $30,000 per year, according to The Washington Times.

time.com...

That is about what I make a year if I dont do overtime.

In fact almost all of my friends make that amount or less a year. And I bet their benefits such as insurance are a lot better than what most people I know are offered.

I, like these staff, can chose to find another job if I feel like it.

If cortez feels so strongly, surely she can live off of lets say, 80000 dollars a year. So she could pay her workers more by donating her salary to her staff if she felt so inclined.

But ultimately I dont think it is wrong of her to bring this up at all, it sucks people do hard jobs for little money.

Honestly I dint notice. I wont post pics of some of my friends, but honestly they are much darker (some with obnoxious fake tans year round) despite being considered a white race.

My only point was for that user to use the old "Oh people must have a problem with her because she is brown" card shows more about that posters racist beliefs than anyone elses.

im with you my friend
i would be with you if she was white or black

but shes brown and i noticed

hhahahahahah

not for nothing but i suspect you did too.

as we agree its not wrong to notice.
its kind of a thing people notice.

you did just not see a picture of her or from a distance.
youve been active in threads with Ocasio-Cortez titles and posts.
youre a smart guy

if she looked as she does and her name was Mercedes Antoinette then i maybe could see you not noticing but even then me doubts it.

t dont matter though. not in the least.

im just in a # around mood i guess

this is probably very true
but i think that people have problems with her just cause she is brown is true too

i can totally see it

i think racism is very much alive in this country. granted i dont think it is like how it is shown on the news cause like with everything else its the worst most extreme example of # piped to us with a spin.

i think down in reality land there are a lot of people, mostly gen x and older that still have it.

not even a hate or even discrimination.

cant really explain it

just how i feel

I havent particpated in many cortez threads at all actually.

IOn fact, as I said in one of my videos, although from what I read of her i dsilike her socialists policies and feel she is uniformed, I alos know that most of what I have read about her is from media outlets with an axe to grind about her, so I am trying to withold judgement.

As to her statements here, I dont really have a problem at all with them.

Now her color, I had seen a few pictures of her and her color never corssed my mind. All I have read of her background is she was a poor bartender in new york. I didnt read much race stuff, with actually I think is to her credit, though I could have just missed it.

Her name sounded hispanic, but it didnt register with me when looking at her that oh, here is an Hispanic lady.

Here is the first google picture of her I found, which is a fair likeness looking at others.

Here is beto o'rourke, who also has a Hispanic sounding name

Who is more "brown"?

I only know Beto is not hispanic because I saw outlets comment that his first name is actually not beto and he may be going by that to sound more ethnic.

Again, I am not saying I am so beyond race I dont notice it. If ocasio cortez was darker I would have noticed it.

But had I saw her involved in an incident without knowing her name and asked to give a description, I would not have said "brown"

Sure of course there are a very small group of people with almost no power that may have a problem with brown people.

Same is true of people who hate white people, or asian people, etc.

If a person assumes like that poster did that criticism of a "brown person" must be because that person is "brown" then it shows that they are so focused on skin color that they cant fathom someone may have a different reason to not like that person, and are most likely racist themselves.

If you break the numbers down, it's not really that simple.

Representatives make $174k a year. The average cost of living in DC is at, or a little over, $80k a year. So for the sake of round numbers, lets say she drops down to $80k a year and gives the rest to her staff. Congressional staff salaries average between $30k and $50k a year (which come out of the MRA). Representatives have 18 full time staffers and a few part-timers, and this excludes interns entirely.

That's about $5k extra for each staffer if a rep forgoes over half their salary. Even representatives that use their entire MRA, or nearly their entire MRA, for nothing but staff salaries are paying their staffers an average of $70k to $80k a year. An extra $5k a year might put those staffers into "comfortable" territory.

Sure, they can have a smaller staff which means more money for fewer people. It also means even less gets done on The Hill than already gets done. If a rep gives up over half their salary, it might get their staff, on average, somewhere close to what it takes to live in DC.

Sure, people can quit and find work elsewhere. Congress could also stop treating their staffers like crap, too.

Staffers should get a living wage.

As long as everyone else does too.

Ok so then who should pay more for the staffers?

My friends that work on farms should be taxed more to pay them more because they live in a city that has a high cost of living?

Or will will just print more money like with the proposed free health care and college plans?

Just because there would be less staffers doesnt mean less work would get done either.

Again, I have no problem with her highlighting some people work hard and deserve more money.

But it gets a little tiresome listening to people that want to restribute everyone elses wealth say that before they do everything they personally can.
