Recently, I've been trying to think of what the real definition and meaning of being conservative and liberal really mean.

Not what's in the dictionary or wikipedia and not what democrats, republicans or any other party do or say.

Why do we have this divide?

As Humans, we think in opposites first before we find the real meaning. Our first thoughts are always---Hot or Cold, Short or Tall, Near or Far, Big or Small, Rich or Poor, Healthy or Unhealthy, Fast or Slow. It's the way we're wired. The reality is that we then find the real descriptors...Medium, 5 foot 8 inches, Active, but slightly overweight, Luke warm, 2 miles away, 15 minutes from now.

Keep that in mind as you consider the following.

Liberal means looking out for each other.

Conservative Means looking out for ourselves.

We see the liberal mindset with welfare, Healthcare for all, free education...we're looking out for our fellow citizens.
We see the conservative mindset with the 2nd Amendment and the rest of our freedoms, Less taxes and government oversight.

Society always works best when we do both...look out for ourselves and our freedoms, but help each other out when needed.

A society that goes to far in one direction weakens and fails over time or becomes broken.

Just a quick point.

If you think about it, the 2nd Amendment might, also be considered an effort to “look out for each other” in that the right to bear arms was believed by the founders to be necessary to the existence of a “regulated militia”, which they felt was vital to the establishment and maintenance of an independent republic.

The founders were looking to the survival of the “whole” of the new country, not just individuals.

In that sense, the 2nd holds true the so-called “liberal” mindset, does it not?

You're confusing liberal with leftist. Liberty is freedom from an overreaching government. Leftists who are mislabeled as liberals have a feminine mindset based on feelings/emotions, which is necessary to properly raise young children. Conservatives have a masculine mindset based on knowledge, facts & numbers, which is neccessary to have responsible adults. Where they differ is leftists want to treat everyone like young children without agency (responsibility for one's actions) & conservatives want adults to take responsibility for their actions. Conservatives are more liberal than leftists in the context of liberty.

Honestly, there is a balance. Ying and Yang. You can't really have one without the other. The struggle is keeping that balance and not going too far left or too far right. It is a natural give and take.

Liberal means looking out for each other. Conservative Means looking out for ourselves.

This depends on your point of view. Liberals are more than happy to use other peoples money to take care of everyone and cost is no obstacle. They will give and give and give without regard to resources available. All you have to do is look at the national debt and unfunded liabilities to realize this.

Conservatives are not necessarily against taking care of others but there is a limit to resources available and conservatives recognize that truth. We also recognize that people will always demand more, and more, and more. Push the limit of necessity and eventually demand pleasure, comfort and complete subsistence at the hands of the self sufficient.

Welfare is a good thing but not intended or expected to sustain an individual from cradle to grave. That's just not logical in 99.999% of the cases needing assistance. We would all like to live in a utopia but reality doesn't care what we would like.

Show me a socialist or communist society that has succeeded and I'll show you an autocratic society that is completely devoid of civil rights, freedom and liberty.

My interpretation of liberal versus conservative. Liberals think with their heart and conservatives think with their brain. That's it!

Edit: Think about this. Just who is more concerned for the general welfare. The liberal ideology that will eventually bankrupt the system and drive everyone into abject poverty or a conservative position that demands fiscal prudence long term where everyone benefits perpetually to varying degrees?

Quick thread on the real difference between liberals and conservatives

from a personal perspective....

In my village the conservatives are angry and beat their wives and children

and the libs are always mocking and laughing at the conservatives but know to mind their own business.

In my village the liberals feel entitled to the fruits of my labor while refusing to work themselves.

Liberal means looking out for each other. Conservative Means looking out for ourselves.

It’s more a line between dependence and self-reliance.

All the labeling is exhausting. Once you choose, it seems like there's more of yourself invested in maintaining the image and group than there is in thinking

Society always works best when we do both...look out for ourselves and our freedoms, but help each other out when needed.

I think that different types of thinking, and different types of people are only natural. As in - part of the natural world

The political/cultural/philosophical ecosystem is always trying to achieve a kind of workable, sustainable balance

We need each other. Like it or not

Ah, but the truth of the matter is that we are all completely interdependent, and interconnected in multiple ways.

It is an illusion to think one can be entirely self-reliant: a function of adolescent ego separating from dependence.
And it is also an immaturity to think we should become or stay dependent entirely on others.

There must be a balance - that is the path of the mature individual.

So according to your definition a conservative is selfish and a liberal is selfless?

Nope. Try again.

If I may add to that: liberals give the gov't too much credit for positive changes, while conservatives give too much credit tobig business.

Historically the distinction begins in French politics, in the aftermath of the Revolution, and it's all about attitudes to change.
The liberal hopes to make the world better by changing things.
The conservative hopes to keep the world good by resisting change.
Both attitudes can be thinking of the good of others, both attitudes can be self-centred.
(However, liberals are slightly more prone to develop a sense of smug self-righteousness about the attitude they've adopted, so that they feel virtuous even in the act of hating their opponents)

But that's the base definition. We have to be selfish...we can't take care of anyone else unless we've taken care of ourselves first. We can't give anyone help, unless we have enough to give.

Selfish is just as important as selflessness. To be a working society, we must have both parts of that.

But see you've not framed the discussion according to French PHilosophy and politics. Why do that?

Take it at surface value. Liberal mindset to help others. Conservative mindset to help oneself. Don't let someone with an agenda pollute your mind.

Okay so good responses...even ones that I don't necessarily agree with, they give me food for thought.

It's hard to frame this discussion without some kind of label though.

The polar opposites or the yin and yang in every society and every family and every business is helping others and making sure you've taken care of yourself.

In a business, taking care of yourself means the business is profitable. But we know that businesses that really take care of their employees do better, have more employee moral, better retention, less turnover, better customer service.

In a family it's all about taking care of others, but as a business owner and breadwinner if I don't work enough hours and spend time away from my family being selfish in a way, then I can't take care of them.

But in that line, where does taking care others fit in? We're always going to have someone how gets hurt, gets and illness, gets old, needs a hand up ...not a hand out.
